I'm initializing it now, with a sick feeling in my stomach, to be honest. If I have any problems it's being boxed up and goes back.
Funny thing is, it was $22 cheaper when I bought it today versus yesterday. I guess they overcharged me, or under charged me today. And no, he sees no reason for me to want a backlit reader. That's okay, I didn't see the point of them for a really long time either. |

Oh, and if the problems are due to my micro SD card, don't care, it's going back. I'm not buying multiple cards in order to find one that'll work. Gone are the days where I can find a cheap 4G card, now they are all between 16G and 64G for $$.

It's not freezing when I connect it, but I can't get that shelf patch to work. This is what is currently in Kobo ereader.config:

No matter what I do, it's still displaying the shelves in random order.

It is a bug on the shelf list, not when you are looking at a shelf. On the Glo, Aura and Aura HD, the shelf list has an option to change the sort order. It has name, number of books and date created. The current sort order is stored in the config file. The sort options were added in in the last two or three firmware versions. And there are two bugs related to the option. First is that if the option is missing from the file, the sort choices are not displayed and the list is in date created order. The other is that if you upgrade from a firmware version that doesn't have the option to one that does, the options is not added to the file. One of the firmware versions must have added it or otherwise we wouldn't know about it. But the later versions don't.

I'm just chiming in for moral support. Stick with it and you'll be at least as happy with the Glo as your Touch, probably moreso. If you have more than a few collections or shelves, Calibre is definitely the way to go for management. PeterT's excellent stickied post is a must read and after digestion and a bit of playing around yields a really nice setup. The main advantage being that once you have everything organized, even if you run into a future firmware issue requiring a factory reset it is very little work to get all your titles back in the proper collections on the reader.

After many attempts, including a new install of the firmware, I finally managed to get the "patch" to work. I have no idea how, maybe the chicken I sacrificed appeased someone. I have notepad++, but I had read on another thread that using Notepad was okay as long as I didn't add extra spaces.
The new Glo is working much better than the previous one I had, so unless something terrible happens I'll be keeping it. The processing time is MUCH slower over my Touch firmware - over an hour to process 401 epubs from an SD card - but it digested them. I gave up using Calibre for the Glo, I couldn't figure out how to transfer the books onto the reader already on the shelves. Calibre would create the shelf, but the Glo said there were no books on it. I had to add the books manually to the shelves through the reader. I didn't see PeterT's sticky, and spent 2 hours shelving books. |

I'm so glad this one is better! Which color did you get?
Here is the thread you couldn't find. Quick Guide to Shelf Management. I encourage you to read through it when you get a chance. |

I bought the black. When I got the Touch in '11 (I think), I wanted the lavender/white, but my husband talked me into the black. I didn't want it, but... Now, though, after having the black, I prefer it over the coloured back. I keep it in a case anyway (for me cases are like shoes for other women, I keep buying new ones and change them every 6 months), so I'd never see the back. Also, none of the case liners will rub off onto the back of the reader and stain it, and black won't show the dirt. If they had a pure red, though, I'd have bought it a heart beat, lol!
I finally saw the sticky! I'll read it, but I'm probably not going to be putting 400+ books on at one time again. However, it'll be good to know for the next time, and maybe I can tweak it for my daughters' Kindle Paperwhites. They're not showing the covers on sideloaded books. ![]() Last edited by VirgoGirl; 04-30-2014 at 10:24 AM. |

So when sending books you should connect the glo to caliber, send the books, disconnect , let the glo process the books, connect again to caliber, let it update the metadata and disconnect again, at this time your metadata should be in the glo, including the shelves. The first time I thought I was doing something wrong, but later I read in the forum that it took two connections for the metadata be shown in the glo, and I’ve seen several times people with this same issue. Don’t give up on caliber just yet, it is far better than managing books by hand, and with the plugins it gets even better and easier. Have you tried the kobo utilities plugin? |

Actually I think (but can't verify right now) that books are added to shelves on the initial xfer, however series info is only added on the second connection (and by that I mean the series info shown under the book name in library view).

Yes, the books are put onto the shelves when they are sent to the device. If someone is seeing something different, I'll have a look at it.

I have it as "puts the books on the reader, but not on the shelves(into the collections), until after a reconnect" on my Glo with my setup cribbed from PeterT's sticky.
I always check after the initial transfer and processing, and it always takes a reconnect. I have been doing so because I keep reading that it does it on the first pass, so I've been assuming a process change in Calibre, but I've yet to see it... OTOH, I may be a poor observer for this one as in my mind it's all one process that occurs after the initial transfer and I may have failed to check collections that are both purely series based or purely shelf based. I can make the statement that I have yet to see any books on the shelves I've checked until after the second pass. But, I may have failed to check shelf column based collections. And no, I'm not going to wipe my Glo and do it again so I can observe the process again... unless I have to. With in excess of 350 titles side loaded I can't put up with how long it takes with the current firmwares unless I must. Between a slow USB one transfer from my ancient X41 and the processing, it even tests my limits. Last edited by TechniSol; 04-30-2014 at 10:28 PM. |

I just had to put a couple of books on my Glo to test something else, so I paid attention to the shelves. They were added to existing shelves during the send. I'll check later in case there is a problem with creating a new shelf during the send.
