Paperwhite 2 light distribution of the screen question?

Good to know--thanks eschwartz...I would assume this would be a toggle where you could turn the light on and off, right?

Haven't seriously thought about jailbreaking, but I might at some point. Mostly to get custom fonts and maybe custom screen savers.

It's a small patch. The Paperwhite 2 works like usual only the lowest light setting actually disables it.

It works great. I can suggest it.

I just received the second device KPW2 and I am wondering which one should I give back to Amazon. The second one has very pleasant creamy color of the screen and doesn't have so obvious dark areas on the bottom of the screen. The backlight is much more even, but the screen itself is a little bit more tilted comparing to the first unit. I mean they all are, but this one is about half of mm tilted up to the right if you understand what I mean.
The creamy color of the new device is much more comfortable for night reading.

Don't look at the screen in the dark on maximum brightness - you're never going to use it in those conditions. Look at the screen in the conditions in which you're going to use it and make up your own mind.

They both look absolutely fine to me.

Apart from agreeing with HarryT, I'd keep the second one for the reasons you have said yourself. It does look almost perfect in terms of the evenness of the light, I find a slight blue tint to a screen very off putting, but the slightly cream background looks quite good. I can't see the tilt you mention, which is understandable since you reckon it's only half a mm, which is pretty tiny.

They both have so different whites, it's like they are from different generation..:/
It's very hard to decide which one to keep, because they both have their own pros and cons.
The new one is definitely more yellowish and I am not sure if this is an advantage or not, but have very even backlighting (of course in so far as the technology allow this..)

You're doing it again, aren't you? Taking photographs in the dark with the light at maximum brightness. What have we already said about that?

Actually it is at value of 10 in my latest post- exactly what I use when I read. The first pictures when the devices were both at max brightness was just to make an equal start point for judgment, it was an example, I don't use it this way.

I think you pretty much answered your own question with the new pictures. You like the creamy more for your eyes and night reading and you don't notice the shadows on that new one. Sounds to me like that wold be the one.

As to the tilting, I know exactly what you are talking about, although its not visible on the pictures. I have a PW1, which was my 3rd replacement and it has a slightly slanted screen. The first I got had 3 mm, it was horrible. My current one has very little, maybe 1 mm and I can tell you I haven't noticed that in a year now. All 3 of the PW1 I had at some points, replacements, had some tilting.
I have to say I wish my PW1 looked like either of your 2 options. Mine has horrible dark shadows and diagonal light beams. So the new generation seems to have gotten a lot better as I don't really see any of that on either of your PW2.

Just go with the one your eyes like best in the dark and just enjoy reading.

I'm trying to figure out why you have to choose between a slanted screen or a blotchy screen. (Why would there be enough "play" in the Paperwhite to allow the screen to "slant" in the first place?) I think I would keep going until they got one right. It was partly because of this thread that I decided against trying a Paperwhite. I'm beginning to wonder what kind of quality control they have with these things -- if any.

If I had to choose, however, the new one's screen seems much nicer.
