@Harry and mjdb:
My cybook loses the page all the time, so is there an easy way for me to check for corrupt files? I'm not using an SD card currently and it seems to happen with pretty much every book. I know that leaving the Cybook on all the time shouldn't lower my battery power too much, but since I started leaving it on I have noticed that it definitely dies a fair bit faster, so I would like to fix the problem. Any ideas at all would be appreciated ![]() |

I'm not using an SD card; are people only having corrupted file problems on cards?

Not a corrupt SD card
Quote:
Now, I have 400+ books on this card. I will be reading along just fine, go to turn a page and the system freezes. At this point the entire file I am reading becomes corrupt. Sometimes all of the other files on the system will be fine, its just the one I was reading. And, for the one corrupt file I am unable to access anything -- not even the part I've already read. As a test, I do plan on trying a different SD card next time it gives out. However, I will be surprised if that is the problem. The start of this is too coincidental with the firmware upgrade. If it is really a bad area on the SD card its funny that that area keeps moving to whichever book I am currently reading. Michael |

Hmmm, I guess it could happen that way, but I wouldn't expect it to. If the entire library was compromised every time, then a directory problem makes sense. However, often the problem is that only the file I am reading is corrupted. Since I read different files located throughout my 400+ library I'm not sure a directory issue really works. Remember we are talking about a hardware problem hear, since I have reformatted the SD card between each problem.
Anyway, to believe the problem is in the directory, we must believe that a different part of the directory fails for each book, and that it just so happens to affect the book I am reading. It makes much more sense to think of something in the Cybook hardware or software that has an error. The Cybook would naturally access the directory on the SD card in order to read the card. If there is a problem with the Cybook H/W or S/W, then it would be natural to think that it could be corrupting the directory location for the book that it is retrieving. The punch line; however; is that I tried this with a new SD card and I had another failure. I do believe the problem lies with the Bookeen H/W or S/W as it accesses the SD card. thx, Michael |

I also had serious problems with my SD card--to the point that I never put books on it, even though it would be easier (at least I not deliberately put ebooks on it--Mobireader put them on once and none of them had working bookmarks or would remember the page, and some of them had weird page defects) My main problem with the SD card was that as I understand it the cybook would make the folders it would need. I would reformat the card, put it in, take it out to put something on it and the computer would say one of the new files was corrupted. So--at least sometimes it's the cybook itself.

I don't think it's anything in the firmware, Michael, because that would affect everyone, and that's clearly not the case. I suppose you could have a faulty SD slot on your Gen3, perhaps?

I had an SD card corruption where the contents of an entire directory (inside eBooks) disappeared and were replaced by the contents of a different directory, actually, it looked like there were duplicated entries in the FAT or something, as if the files were symbolic links... This happened after a series of crashes and reboots while I was trying the new firmware, so I tend to think it's the firmware's fault; also because the SD card is otherwise working fine.
I've thought of switching the read-only thingy in the SD card, but I guess that would mean the current page and bookmarks would no longer work for books stored in the card, and that's a bad thing... |

I think it would be the issue in the firmware, probably race conditions in the code that's writing to the memory cards, which would cause it to corrupt the data on the card only if certain timing conditions were met. Different card readers in different specimens of Cybook probably have different access times for various accesses, varying by microseconds of course, but that's why it would corrupt certain cards, or on certain readers, and wouldn't touch the other cards.
Writing to the card should be a part of underlying Linux system - perhaps Netronix is using Linux that is ages old, and didn't update its code even once since they first compiled the software together, and there are very old bugs in this code. All the more reason to let the users look at it... |

I now have the gen3 bookmark problem, apparently on all the books I put on my SD card. I spent copious amounts of time downloading them all from mobileread the other night, in order to take them along with me for the next 10 days (I leave tomorrow.) But last night I realized that bookmarks won't work at all with books on the SD card (which, btw, I'd never used before, except to load firmware, and yes, I reformatted it before adding all the books). So if I want to read anything while I'm in the mountains at my tai chi camp, I'm going to have to page through to where I was. Or, I guess I'll have to just leave it on, and not switch books until I'm done. Sigh. If anybody has a quick fix, let me know.

I may have fixed my problem (took a while) by following the advice to reformat the SD card to FAT32. I had to recopy the files from my mobipocket reader -- couldn't just copy them to the pc and paste them though. The few books I've recopied seem to be handling bookmarks now.
