Is there even any way to get a Kindle file? I thought they all had to be beamed to your individual Kindle device by Amazon, that there is no download to your PC then transfer, or transfer from Kindle to your PC for purchased books?

You can download them & transfer via USB, but need a Kindle registered to your account to buy them.

I dunno what's the right way to convert your purchased kindle books to other formats,
anyway, i guess you can purchase kindle e-books without having a kindle, you just need kindle for PC software,
it's might be silly thing to do, but at least, now you can get many rare electronic books for competitive prices

For AZW Kindle ebooks, use mobidedrm.py (AZW is essentially MOBI). Note that for mobidedrm to work you need the PID of the target device. It is easy to get the PID of a Kindle 1/2/DX (or an iPhone), but so far the PID used by Kindle for PC is a secret. So you can't strip the DRM from K4PC ebooks.

Most "rare" Kindle ebooks are in the TOPAZ format, which is Kindle-only. These do work on K4PC, and there is typically no non-TOPAZ versions for sale anyway.

I have a question about the opposite. Can Sony ebooks be read on a Kindle? I started buying Sony ebooks before the Kindle was released in Canada.

Not out of the box. If you are talking about Sony books store books, not gonna happen. If ePub you could possibly remove the DRM and convert them.

The site rules (based on the DMCA) prohibits posting URLs to specific sites where "circumvention" tools can be downloaded.

As far as I know it's perfectly fine to discuss the tools as long as you don't post links.

There's always the brute force way: Gadwin Printscreen + Abbyy Finereader can be used if you have a little patience. Works with any format that can be read on a PC.

You don't OWN any book

Emphasis mine. As you see, you don't own books that you download from fictionwise (they remain the "exclusive property of the publisher or its licensors") and you can't "transfer or sell" them.
DRM is irrelavent - you never OWN a book even if you buy a hardcopy at the book store - you're still basically licensing that copy of it because the copyright holder still OWNs the book - it's easier to transfer the copy but you still can't make copies of it and distribute them freely to others or anything else that breaches the copyright

DRMed material is typically locked to a device for enforcement of the DRM but DMCA doesn't supercede the fundamental right of copyrighted materials licensees to use the material for themselves in manners that do not breach the copyright

DMCA's intent is to keep you from putting DRMed material on sharing sites and distributing in breach of the copyright, not to prevent you from using a copy you paid for

I can transfer Kindle books from my PC to my wife's iPod touch without issue - so they DO understand the importance of being able to move the copyrighted material around

And even if someone wants to be anal about interpretation - who's going to know or care as long as you're just moving the book from your Kindle to your Sony? Now start posting copies of the books - that's a different matter.

The methods used to transform a Kindle book to a format compatible with the Sony don't actually crack the DRM or encryption - they let the DRM software unlock the content and then transform it.

And yes - you CAN buy Kindle books without actually owning a Kindle - I use Kindle for PC on my touchscreen Windows tablet and can very easily buy and download ebooks from Amazon.

This seems to be a reasonable if not entirely legal interpretation.

If I said this I would worry that I had started to become delusional.

Of course the methods used to transform a Kindle book to a format compatible with the Sony cracks/removes the DRM and unencrypts the entire file.

This is completely true, Kindle for PC does allow anyone to buy Kindle books without owning a Kindle. I do find it slightly odd that your replying to a post almost two years old with this statement.

Kindle for PC may not have even been a memo in someones inbox yet back then.

What if I also own a Kindle reader? Is there a way to transfer the books to the Sony PRS-505?

Only by removing any DRM the books might have. They can then be converted to ePub or LRF for the 505.

Hi this is my first post here.

Hope this helps.

Download Kindle for PC.
Buy your kindle book in the format mentioned.
Google and get Python scripts "unswindle" look for a link with "cabbages" in it.
Save your drm free mobi file.
load it into Calibre
Convert to epub (or sony format)

I did a "cheap test" with "the 3rd pig detective agency" (which was fairly good book btw) I think it cost me a £1. When I was sure it worked I then did the more expensive book.

-------------------------

Why do this?

1)I just bought frankie boyles book for £3.5 at amazon uk - It was at least five quid everywhere else at the time (I think other retailers have been forced to drop some of their prices now)

2)I managed at one point to create a USA amazon account. At some point i'll download Chris Stewart's Lemons books (when price is right). I think this ebook is about £13 if even available in the uk....

You should download an older version of Kindle for PC (I think the cabbages gives the link, in my case it is v. 1.0). Then it works. And works fine!
"Unswindle" won't work with a new version of Kindle for PC.
