I had my Kindle Keyboard for three years. I dropped it and it broke, so I bought a Paperwhite. I like it a lot, although I do miss the text to speech. I only upgrade when my stuff breaks.

My last upgrade was to the Kobo Glo for the light. That will be it for me. I looked at my sister's Paperwhite and it had a few nice features, but nothing earth-shattering. I am tempted to chuck everything for an iPad Air, but am trying to resist as long as possible so that by the time I am ready, it will be even lighter and faster and better.

I've upgraded once, to get an ereader with an inbuilt light. Prior to that, mine have been refurbished but new models. I don't plan on upgrading for at least a couple of years and only if there is something really worth upgrading for and not just for the sake of new tech.

I went from Kobo Touch to Kobo Aura for the increased resolution and the light. Gave my Touch away.

I upgraded twice. Once from a used Palm IIIxe to the Palm Z22, and then to the Kindle Keyboard 3G.
I can't quite remember why I went to the Palm Z22. The screen is smaller than the IIIxe, although I did get more memory, a faster processor, a genealogy app, and a rebate ![]() The Kindle Keyboard's free near-worldwide text-based web coverage would be hard for me to give up voluntarily, at least so long as www.readingthenet.com remains live. |

I took advantage of Sony's trade in program to upgrade from the 600 which was 2 years old when I did to the T1. I will keep the T1 until it dies.

When my present ereader wears out or when they bring out an eink screen with color I'll upgrade. Otherwise it's a big expense for little return from my point of view.

We still have two analog TVs that works just fine. We keep them in bedrooms. For most everything, I keep stuff until it dies. The only gadgets that make me break from this norm are smartphones and tablets. However, they're not developing as quickly as they did a few years ago so I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon.

I've upgraded my Kindle every year since its inception, but my Paperwhite 2 is so perfect, for the first time I'm considering not upgrading to the new model when it's released later this year.

I upgraded for frontlight tech, but there's nothing thrown away or wasted, as my son needed a reader. I upgraded my original iPad very recently also, again for better tech (retina iPad mini), and the old iPad was gratefully received and is being enthusiastically used by our local public primary school.

Upgrade? Nah!... I bought my Sony PRS-505 about 7 years ago in a bargain (before the ipad times). I like the solid metallic design and heft. And (in modest 200 mb) it can carry all the novels I'm currently reading and more (all hail .epub!). No use for internet or dictionary. And all technical books go to my Surface.
IF it kicks the bucket, I would buy the same model if possible. |

How many of us upgrade our readers because of new technology
I still use a first gen Kindle Paperwhite. Didn't see the need to upgrade to the second gen. But I may get a new ereader soon (Aura HD) just because my PW is very slow now and because of the software.

Only did that with my Kindle Fire, and only because I wanted the iPad Mini.
