Unless it was installed in a non-default location?

In which case trying to run "ebook-edit" would still find the right location.

Thanks everybody and I apologize. I had such a busy day today (and Linux problems LOL) that I forgot to check on the computer (the one at work needs Calibre Edit--I'm on the home computer now.)I did check on this computer though and "Edit" is in the opt folder, so it should be pretty easy to see if it's in the other opt folder in the work computer, which I will check first thing tomorrow (I wrote myself a note!) and get back to you. Thanks! Anybody want to check on some of my other Linux problems (they're endless LOL) head over to the Lounge and Gregg's Nearly Interminable... thread.

But in this case, I imagine it is safe enough to assume default settings apply, also the failure message confirms the folder isn't there.

So it does seem as though it must be installed elsewhere...

In any event, Gregg, I would like to know which version of calibre is installed. Also, try typing "ebook-edit" into the terminal. If it works (opens the editor) then it is installed, just hidden. If it says:

Code:
gregory@OptiPlex-170L:~$ ebook-edit
ebook-edit: command not found
then the editor isn't there.
Ran the ebook-edit thing, got exactly your 'command not found' message.

My guess: I installed Calibre off Ubuntu Software Center and got an old crapola version that didn't even have ebook-edit. My guess at a solution: install Calibre from the terminal. If I didn't have you guys helping me (and I'm glad I do!) I'd uninstall the Calibre 1.0 using the Ubuntu Software Center's "remove" button and then go here: http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux and do that first "binary" install. (But I'm going to--wisely--wait to hear from you guys before I do anything. Thanks!)

That is now an old release of Calibre (the current one is 1.28 - 28 revisions later and 6 months later). That would explain why you cannot find the Edit Book function as that has been introduced more recently than the 1.0 release.

Thanks guys. I'm losing faith in the Ubuntu Software Center. It's easy but seems to provide inferior stuff. Anyway, what about my plan of action to get the lastest Calibre and Calibre-Edit (and it would be nice to get them separtely, like on my other Ubuntu computer)?

uninstall the Calibre 1.0 using the Ubuntu Software Center's "remove" button and then go here: http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux and do that first "binary" install.

Sound good or is there a better way of going about it? Thanks.

IMHO that is the best way.

I created a desktop icon linked to a (script) file that contains the official calibre command line.

1 click and 2 enters (yes I know there is a option, but I like to see it really work. Besides, I am NOT that lazy

Correct, you must uninstall the version from the software center. There is nothing wrong with it, except that no one is willing to update the software center with the weekly releases of calibre. You get the latest version as of the Ubuntu release, and it does everything that that version is supposed to do.

Most programs aren't updated weekly like calibre is. And the most popular programs are updated whenever there is an update, but we calibre users are only a small percentage of the Ubuntu users.

Hey, if you'd like to volunteer for Miriam Ruiz and maintain the Ubuntu calibre package more frequently, that'd be great!

I always wondered why they did not just package the commandline and distribute that as the 'Calibre Updater' app

Hmmm, and then it would still be tracked by apt, wouldn't it?

I think it's because the whole point of using the distro is to use system libraries rather than bundling the dependencies.

I tracked with you partly. (the 'that is the best way' part) The rest you semi-lost me. I Googled "script" and "batch file" and "CLI." I'm still not sure what you mean though. Like, I made a desktop icon for Kdiff comparison tool. When I click on the icon it brings up the file (that I have previously downloaded and which is stored in the home directory). What you said it sounds like you're summoning the Calibre file brand new from the terminal. Is this the case?

I was thinking I would do the binary install in the terminal and then the Calibre (and hopefully Calibre-Edit) would be in my Applications menu.

I open a Blank Txt file
I past the Calibre comand line into it
I save as getCalibre.sh
I right click on the file: Properties: permissions: tick 'Allow to execute..'

Now when I double click the Icon, I get asked if I want to run in a Terminal (click Yes)

(this is just a local copy so you don't have to always open the web page

BTW the permissions bit is just a GUI way of adding the x bit instead of using chmod

This is the recommended method and will work fine.

You can't install calibre without the editor that is why I was perplexed why folks were attempting to troubleshoot before knowing which calibre version you were using.

Basically, the auto-update I suggested earlier, but this one is manual.

On that note, if you'd like to try it again, here is an updated upgrade script, and this should download it and install it in the right location:
Code:
sudo wget -O /tmp/calibre.tar.gz https://www.mobileread.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=120506&d=1395295772
Code:
sudo tar -xzf /tmp/calibre.tar.gz -C /usr/
Then use this:
Code:
sudo EDITOR="gedit" crontab -e
to edit crontab, and add the at the end:

Code:
0 6 * * 5 /usr/bin/calibre-upgrade.sh > /dev/null 2>&1
Attached Files
File Type: gz calibre-upgrade.sh.gz (422 Bytes, 172 views)
File Type: gz calibre-upgrade.sh.tar.gz (554 Bytes, 165 views)
