Here are some examples of good images with good resolution from a book I read a few weeks ago...

Both Exiles and Quest came with .png's in my epubs. These were some of the first ebooks I ever bought as it is one of my favorite series of all times, so there could have been updating in the interim.

The map in Quest is much clearer than the one from Exiles and is attached.

Baen are on "no new sales" for both but the Gateway editions seem OK, I downloaded a Kindle sample for Exiles which includes the maps

In the interests of balance, I thought I might mention that the map in my paperback edition of Riddle-Master's Game by Patricia A McKillip is absolutely shocking. The black is too heavy, meaning all the letters run together. You can just about make out what things are meant to be if you concentrate.

Maps are a problem in ebooks, though. Even if the resolution is good enough, it's not always easy or quick to navigate to and from the map.

What was the book? I have a small interest in shipwrecks in the Great Lakes and those images look like they could be on that topic.

So Terrible a Storm: A Tale of Fury on Lake Superior by Curt Brown, it was a Kindle daily deal a couple weeks ago.

I'm sorry I missed the deal. I'll keep an eye on it while I finish up the book I'm reading now -- it looks like an interesting read.

Thanks!

Nice! Now those look to be some proper maps generated right from the vector art... Although those JPG maps should have been PNGs!!!

Artificial Images like charts/graphs/maps are where lossless formats like PNG shine.

I actually had a book, where they "updated" the EPUB and stuck an even SMALLER resolution map.

625x1000 PNG -> 444x705 JPG

You know what would be nice? They should hand out the vector files, so I can generate my own high resolution images!

It's also couponable at Kobo...

I found it an interesting read. It reads kind of like a very long newspaper article in some ways (the author is a newspaper guy).

Now there is a set of books that I really, really want as ebooks (the Riddle-master trilogy). I don't have my paperback copy, but I think the issues with the map in that book have to do with the poor quality of the paper.
