It really depends on whether or not it is a self-induced coma. Self-induced, I'm hoping my wife is there along with me and reading is NOT what I had in mind.

...even better. If I'd convinced mother-dearest of my illness, she would usually make me up some lime jelly ("jello" for those silly Americans who refuse to speak proper Australian) and some flat lemonade.

Hmm, I wonder why I ended up at a psychotherapist and a hypnotherapist being treated for hypochondria (okay, amongst other things )?

Cheers,

When I broke a toe (the same one twice in 3 months) I got lots of reading done. But if being sick involves a headache I get out my mp3 player (I have several), put in the more comfy earphones and pick one of my favourite J. D. Robb audiobooks. Then it doesn't matter if I fall asleep.
I have more ebooks but I also have a LOT of audiobooks too. (Including the 46 cd set of Lord Of The Rings - (yes a legal copy), and all 7 Harry Potters (also legal).
Literature is my major vice. Who needs alcohol or drugs where there are books?

What's the Latin phrase for that type of argument? Ipso Reducto... something something? I was at a corporate training resort campus place recently, known both for its native squirrel population (I kid you not), and the feral cats.

Someone remarked that with a recent change of ownership of the facility, the squirrel population went up, BECAUSE they had removed the cats. I doubted that, and suggested that in fact there were more squirrels BECAUSE the squirrels had eaten the cats...

Oh, my itchiing brain! What type of argument is that, flipping the causation around backwards?

Since I can't go to sleep unless I read at least a couple of pages, there have been times when I was really p****d out of my tree, and still managed to get my reading done. Despite my eyes not being able to focus properly

I looked it up in my "OED For The Common Man":

Sick, adj.

1. Afflicted with an unnatural fetish of some variety, particularly one related with either squirrels, gorillas, cockroaches, lions, squids, dogs, bubbles, pastries, poissons (especially if it's next to the blue one), canards (and, basically, all other French nouns), liseuses (let me try again: liseuses, liseuses; I just can't get that one), avatars which are not your own, or the spleens, intestines, or other internal organs which are not you own.
2. Not in proper condition; impaired: you're a sicko [noun, sorry] because you spend time reading and/or posting messages in The Lounge at MobileRead (or, anywhere else in the forum if you do so while completely nekkid - not even a towel!).
3. Mentally, morally, or emotionally deranged, corrupt, or unsound: a sick mind; c.f. 1, 2

defined in those terms, there's clearly been an outbreak of *something* around here. i would say it has already reached epidemic proportions.

You might be referring to reductio ad absurdam, Taylor. It seems the most likely, given your example.

I think that's it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_absurdum. Thank you!

This led to this very useful page, which makes me wish "Contra principia negantem disputari non potest" would fit as a user tile. Alas, my signature is otherwise engaged.

Whoops, further reading found exactly what I was after, recognized as soon as I saw it: "cum hoc ergo propter hoc", or "correlation does not imply causation". The increase in squirrel population and lack of visible cats does not mean the squirrels ate the cats.

Wait, wait! Edit number 5 on the post. What I was really after was: Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

Why would you ask me? I assume there's been some kind of short in that brain of yours (or, considering its size, probably a "long"), as sense would dictate that the answers of a person who thinks he can achieve authorship by imbibing a lot of drink and drugs are probably not altogether reliable.

I believe it's called a "stupid argument". Ipso facto, est spumante, sum cum lauder, but I never touched him, officer.
