Well it's a viable market to be in. I keep reading how more and more ereading is on tablets/phones these days with folks predicting dedicated ereaders will dwindle to a small niche.

Even if that doesn't happen making ebooks effectively an app business probably reduces CS costs a bit. I think it's about ease of use and the casual/mainstream consumer. It's telling that they use the same brand (Blinkbox) for movies/tv, music and ebooks. They sell devices and they sell the content to use on them.

I guess when you put it like that you can see the rationale behind it. The fact that I'm far more likely to end up being in the small niche market than someone who reads on a phone/tablet is probably why I personally can't see the point in it.

To be clear I "purchased" the free book from the relevant section of the website. There weren't any pre-loaded freebies or anything (other than the samples).
Just rechecked and no ribbons on the covers on mine, although on the bottom of the pages it does say "XX% of sample", but the sample goes on for 9 chapters on the 1st book which seems an overly big sample ! It took me awhile to find the end of the sample.

I realised you had downloaded a "Free" book. What I meant by freebie was a free copy of a full length book as a thankyou by Blinkbox for opening an account seeing how their book division is new.

That is bizarre, is it not?
....at the moment, but as I said in an earlier post they seem to be extending it to Blackberries, PC, Kindle & Nook sometime.

There's recent news that Tesco will be selling Blinkbox books to Waterstones. I find it unfortunate that it initially planned to be able to be readable to any device. Well, except Kindle. It's not just the Blinkbox books though, Tesco will also be selling the music and movies as well.
