Yes the kepub font size only looks about 5% bigger, so perhaps something has changed in recent firmware.

Edit: I tried again with the font size slider at maximum and counting the number of pixels in the screenshot, and the font size in the epub and kepub are identical. It seems to be that the line spacing is a bit wider on the kepub, but the font size is the same.

If calibre were doing that, it would be doing it for normal ePub files as well. I wrote the KePub conversion plugin and it just extends the ePub converter and adds the KePub tags to the content files. No touching of any font sizes at all except for what the normal ePub converter would do.

It is

I've taken a look at this with my Aura HD (firmware 3.2.0) using "The Widow Lerouge" and here's what I note:
  • For my margin/font settings, which were made to make KePub files look good (at least, what I think looks good), the ePub version looks really bad. No margins at all and the text issquashed too close together.
  • The font size appears to be the same as what I've been using for the KePub reader. It may be slightly different, but it's not different enough that my 30/20 uncorrected vision can tell the difference.
  • The book does not start at the cover page or show the book's front matter; rather, it starts directly at the first page of Chapter One.
  • Switching to the KePub version, the text looks "normal" based on my KePub reader settings. Again, I can't tell any difference in the font.
  • Repeating with Document Default gives me the same results.

The ePub file was downloaded and directly saved to the Kobo reader. The KePub file was generated by adding the book to calibre and sending to the reader with the following driver settings (relating to editing files within the book) activated:
  • Hyphenate files
  • Clean up ePub markup
  • Replace Content Language Code
  • Smarten Punctuation

jgoguen: What you are seeing agrees with what I saw.

The epub opening to the first text page is expected. A new epub will open to the first page in the TOC. I'm not sure if this is a standard or just something that the Kobo firmware does.

So to be clear. the extended driver effectively does a new epub to epub convert, but adds some extra stuff in the process. So in doing that it does whatever a calibre epub to epub would do - like taking note of any preferences CSS filters, any extra css , any global find & replace rules?

No. The extended driver only adds the KePub tags to the book' sinner content files. It does some other things depending on your settings, but nothing it does even approaches a conversion and in fact your conversion settings are 100% ignored.

The conversion plugin, which is totally separate from the driver plugin from your perspective, does a full conversion from the source format (which can be any source calibre supports) to ePub using your conversion settings, then adds the KePub tags to the converted ePub and renames the file to '.kepub' for storage in the calibre database.

i thought so - it sends books with no delay , so i figure there could not be a background conversion running.

is there somewhere, already typed, a spec of exactly what it does do i.e. expand on the some other things ? I don't want to trouble you to write one just for me.

That depends on what detail exactly you're looking for. Check out the first post in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=211135 and if it isn't enough ask questions in that thread.

I'd seen that, thanks
I am just curious to see a before & after book + css.

is there any simple way to pull a book back from e-reader( after sending it with your driver) onto pc & take a peek at what your driver did to the epub?

You can connect to the device, find the file in the file system and unpack it. Both epubs and kepubs zip files. The extended driver also has an option to save a copy of the generated file when it is being sent.

Yea, what davidfor said

In the driver settings is your save template. Books of all formats (including KePub) are saved according to that template. If you can't make sense of it paste the template here and we can tell you what folder to look in.
