Nothing's missing. I like things the way they are. I have more choice than I'll ever use in my lifetime.

Yeah. One of the problems with science fiction at the moment is categorising it. Just look at any ebook store and you'll find that science fiction categories range from the dubious to the absurd. I think Amazon even categorises steampunk under science fiction. While I'm sure there are a few industrial era science fiction books that might appeal to steampunk readers, the central idea of the genre is to ignore the progress of science and have fun with zepplins and steam engines.

Digitize more out-of-print books and make them cheap.

Professionally read audiobooks are much better than TTS books, but for quite some people, TTS might be just good enough. These people wouldn't pay the higher prices for the audiobooks. |

There is a definite shortage of books both fiction and non about other (non-English speaking) cultures. Even a fiction book written by a non resident or a translation, provides some insight into lives and lifestyles we are unfamiliar with. Many good ones exist but not enough and not many for some cultures. Helen |

I would like to see more of European fantasy and sci-fi translated into English. Especially Russian, Polish, Ukraine, Czech, Bulgarian, Romanian etc. Eastern Europe mainly.

I agree with this.
![]() Also books need to be more consistent, with the characterizations and details. It's troubling to see how details mentioned earlier in the book don't match up with the latter part because you'll be wondering what happened with that. |

I take it that the Original Post asks what's missing in books/literature in general, and in that broad sense, I don't have anything to indicate because it varies with the specifics.
There are books where everything is perfect except that the protagonist lacks a backbone. Or like I said earlier the characterization is off. Or there's problem with the editing. There are books where everything is perfect, period. I guess we can all determine all of that after reading a particular book, not to speak as a whole. |
