Yeah. One of the problems with science fiction at the moment is categorising it. Just look at any ebook store and you'll find that science fiction categories range from the dubious to the absurd. I think Amazon even categorises steampunk under science fiction. While I'm sure there are a few industrial era science fiction books that might appeal to steampunk readers, the central idea of the genre is to ignore the progress of science and have fun with zepplins and steam engines.

They probably took it out of the later Kindle readers because they now also own Audible.

Professionally read audiobooks are much better than TTS books, but for quite some people, TTS might be just good enough. These people wouldn't pay the higher prices for the audiobooks.

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, and I have my HG Wells and Jules Verne books to back me up on this

I'd like to see the same happen to people who put apostrophes in possessive pronouns . Honestly, is it REALLY so difficult to remember that "it's" is an abbreviation for "it is" or "it has", and that "its" means "belonging to it"?

I would agree if they had taken out TTS but kept audio, but they deleted audio entirely. It is likely that Amazon removed audio capacity from the e-ink readers because it saved money, and not that not enough people were buying e-ink readers to listen to audiobooks to justify the added cost of the audio equipment.

I think its something thats causing people to overreact. Its not that big a problem. If an entire group of people had it's apostrofe placement wrong, thatd be cause for concern, but I think their iceolated incident's. Eye for one place most of the ape-ostrophe's correctly, and dont make to many spelling mistakes, fortunately. Too bee honest, eye'm ferry proud of that

Sorry. Couldn't resist

We have a child living in Taiwan and have been been reading books on the island's history. There are not enough that are well-researched, highly readable, and in English.
First off I would have said everything was good enough. But you made me think dammit.

There is a definite shortage of books both fiction and non about other (non-English speaking) cultures. Even a fiction book written by a non resident or a translation, provides some insight into lives and lifestyles we are unfamiliar with. Many good ones exist but not enough and not many for some cultures.

I would like to see more of European fantasy and sci-fi translated into English. Especially Russian, Polish, Ukraine, Czech, Bulgarian, Romanian etc. Eastern Europe mainly.

I agree with this.

Also books need to be more consistent, with the characterizations and details. It's troubling to see how details mentioned earlier in the book don't match up with the latter part because you'll be wondering what happened with that.

I take it that the Original Post asks what's missing in books/literature in general, and in that broad sense, I don't have anything to indicate because it varies with the specifics.

There are books where everything is perfect except that the protagonist lacks a backbone. Or like I said earlier the characterization is off. Or there's problem with the editing.

There are books where everything is perfect, period.

I guess we can all determine all of that after reading a particular book, not to speak as a whole.

I don't think we should necessarily criticise books about invertebrates merely for that reason.
