You were correct. I deleted a series from CC (via CC) then I connected and sent the series back to my device and this series is now in its proper series sort position.

Good, at least that part of the scenario is understood.

As for how it got that way, from what I see one of two things must have happened sometime in the past:

1) A book was found by the "scan for new books" process. This seems not to be the case for you.

2) The first book of a series was sent while the language tweaks were in a not-right state. From then on, all the books for that series would be sorted incorrectly, even after the tweak was fixed. Given how often you experiment with things while helping people, this could be true.

Of course, it could still be something else. The additional debugging I have added to CC and calibre will help if it happens again.

FYI, it seems that about 95% of the 10300 books were sent to the device on August 13th 2013, including the series in which I first noticed the problem.
