@Naloomi I think the cause of the duplicate key came from a prior attempt to REBUILD by using adding books .

You now have a mess. You can try and (mostly) recover from this by Building an entirely NEW library with the Adding books detect duplicates option set to IGNORE

To all Lurkers:
Lessons:
Ask before you attempt any Library wide operation if you are not ABSOLUTELY sure you are proceeding down the correct path
Make a Backup of the Library folder before you do this so you can restore and try something else if it fails.

Running Windows 7. I won't buy a PC with Win 8.

The only problem with following kovidgoyal's plan is that I would have to delete everything in the online database as well. that's 13gb of books. Then re-upload it all once it's 'sorted' out.

Guess it's what needs to be done. *le sigh*

Thank you all.

Running things overnight is an excellent way of dealing with mind-numbingly time-consuming tasks.

@Naloomi - no matter what approach you use to getting you library back into shape I think most of us would advise you to do that anyway

From my initial response in post #3

Once you satisfied that all is OK, including your online backup & restore processes you can trash the local backup.
