@*cybmole* - does FFS use, set or or reset any attributes. not AFAIK - i think it builds a table somewhere ( app data maybe) to speed up the next check.

I Do know that if I wholesale copy a folder say to a different drive or PC, then FFS does find hundreds of things to resync, but I figure that is to do with file dates
the whoel issue seems a storm in a teacup though -so what if 1000 opf files get re-copied, that's faster than making a cup of tea anyway.

Over a slow terrestrial link, or a quota bound satellite link or to a commercial ftp server that charges for traffic - it can matter in terms of time and/or money.

It may matter to someone with a systems background because they regard anomalies as indicative of something not working as it should, or them not having an understanding of how something works when they thought they did.

scraping the barrel there 1,000 opf files is what - 10MB tops ?

i did another FFS backup today, it copied only 1 newly added book + changes to some of the metadata & python components.

I wonder if the OP is still able to reproduce this issue ?

Over a 64kbit/sec satellite with 1GB monthly traffic limit it ain't scraping no barrel, especially when there's a storm - I know this because I have one. It costs me about the same per month as my metro 20Mbit/sec unlimited traffic link. My neighbours have a 256kbit service with 4Gb quota for which they pay three times as much, but they're primary producers so they get a tax payer (i.e. me) funded subsidy

The OP may have better things to do at weekend than worry about it - it was a curiosity question as I recall - it wasn't stopping anything working.

I saw you got a new Kobo, and immediately ran into the sort of problems you were trying to avoid - you can't say you weren't warned.

I often find myself comparing peoples woes with ereader's with the Voyager space probes. Always ends up with me saying - if we could do that then, then something has gone terribly wrong over the last 35 years, if we can't do this now

so true and surprised that no-one answered that post, but I did figure it out, eventually. I now need to find some epubs that have lots of coloured bits inside, to give it a good workout.

I wasted about 3 hours through being confused between a 7 inch Kobo arc and a Kobo Arc 7, I did not realise that they are different models & I had the wrong user guide... I was trying to set up multi-user so that everyone in the house could use it, but it turned out that I'd bought the version that only does single user. The arc which I have is the original model, they then launched an arc 7 which was subtly different. But I only paid £79, for a new 64GB model which I thought was a good deal, & I splashed out all of £0.99 to lose the adverts from the killer sudoku app; so so far so good.

Lots of questions and excuse me if I don't go back and requote each person individually.

1. No I only use one synch program. I had traditionally used Goodsync but because of this issue and some prior experiences with oddities with it I searched for some well liked freeware ones and decided to use FreeFileSync for a while to see if the problem continued.

2. Yes the "problem" still manifests itself.

3. Some may consider it "trivial" because of the relatively miniscule bandwidth. I considered it an issue because when as a user I am 100% positive I haven't changed metadata on a file, I start looking for the cause. Changed files can be an indication of malware or any number of issues. When one expects only half a dozen new files on a sync and one consistently sees multiple times that, I'd like to think most prudent computer users would investigate the reason.

4. Sure it's only a matter of maybe 10-15MB each time, but when using watched folders with some online services (the ones I use anyways), the transfer speed for 1000 x 100KB files in no equals the same transfer speed as for 1 x 100,000KB file. As these aren't the only files I back up in this manner to be blunt it just bugs me there are files that shouldn't be changing but for some reason are.

5. I am going to for the time being exclude all current opf files and only making sure I manually transfer those for any new books I add. Seeing as I add only a handful of books a week and rarely if ever change metadata once I have done so immediately after adding it, it should be easy to accomplish. I think I will also hold off on the next Calibre update and just keep monitoring the opf files until hopefully they have all changed to reflect the current version number (should be simple seeing as the date changes), then I'll run my sync program again and start monitoring it again.

It's not really a big issue and to be honest seeing as I have no custom tweaks or anything to speak of, if I ever did suffer a loss of my drive or needed to restore my library, I'd be more worried about the actual books than the metadata.

Thanks all for your input.
