Do the kindles have expansion slots for SD or micro SD cards?
If you'd like an SD slot, a light that turns off, and good font management (including easy sideloading of fonts out of the box as well as thickness/sharpness tweaking of the included fonts), plus all sorts of hacks (two-finger brightness swipe, night mode, options of different reader software), can I suggest you take a second look at Kobo (Glo and Aura)? It is much closer to your original list of "needs" than the Kindle is.

Kobo is where Sony is getting ready to transfer ALL the US accounts to so they must be compatible.

I'm also in the Sony migration boat and have been following this thread with great interest as I'm on the tablet vs. KPW merry-go-round, trying to decide what to get to replace my T-1 (I'm getting tired of having to read with a paper clip by my side).

Dordale, do you use collections on your KPW? I have a large library of books in Calibre, and was wondering if the device collections can contain both downloaded Amazon and sideloaded non-Amazon books in one place. I have the Kindle app on my iPad, with my Amazon books in collections. I tried adding a non-amazon book by email and I was able to select it from personal documents and put it into an existing collection. If I can do the same with a KPW by sideloading from Calibre, that would make my mind up in a hurry. TIA for any help you can give - hope this question isn't off topic.

Yes, you can have both downloaded and sideloaded books in the same Kindle collection.

I've had my PaperWhite for over a year now and have had no problems with it. You can easily set up collections on a registered PaperWhite so that you can sort books easily by genre or fiction and non-fiction for example. Page turning is via finger swipe across a slightly textured screen and once you get used to it it's very easy to use the reader.

You can tap or swipe; personally I find tapping easier. The only place that a swipe is required is to change pages on the home screen (since a tap there opens a book).

I concede the point. Whichever way a person likes to do it the PaperWhite is a very easy to use ereader. I have no complaints about it certainly.

I wasn't arguing with you - just supplying additional information to those who may not know .

Plumadona--Harry is correct--both Amazon and non-amazon books can exist in the same collection--the Kindle doesn't segregate the books the way nooks do. That being said, I don't use collections on my KPW2. To me, the Kindle's implementation of collections are too cumbersome to use with side-loaded books. I read a lot of series books and would prefer to have collections for each series, but I've started using Calibre's plugboards to add the series information to the book title before transferring to my KPW2 and that's an acceptable alternative for me.

I didn't mean to imply that I thought you were HarryT. I was just agreeing with you that both ways work depending on the individual's own choice.

Just thought I'd let you know that I've ordered the Kindle Paperwhite without 3g and can't wait for it to arrive!

Plumadona, I watched a vid which explained how to create collections on the PW itself, seems really easy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYxHP...FAAD&index=169

I hope you're able to watch this; I put the vid in a playlist. If not just look for the vid called "How to create a collection on the kindle paperwhite 2013" you'll get several results.

Thanks for all the help.

Thanks for the info. I'm now waiting for my PW to get here. In the meantime, I've been playing with collections on the Kindle iPad app and it does seem easy. Just in time, too - the screen / print on my much loved T-1 looks like it's starting to fade and changing contrast, etc. doesn't help

Thanks! I should be getting it tomorrow.

I've been following this and other threads and am wondering about this cloud collection thing as I have a great many epubs to convert and add to the new ereader. (Yes, I do want them all on there, and please can we not go there about why is it necessary to have so many books on one's reader? )

Is it a such bad thing to have your books from other sources on their cloud? Am I being naive?
