It is a fun book. Interesting characters, well built world, satisfying ending. Hope you can find it in your budget. Love to hear your opinion.

I have the second book, but haven't read it yet. My understanding is that the two books *are* standalone, though in the same world. Second one is near the top of my TBR, but I've got a couple big non-fictions to finish first.

There was a "What were your 5-star reads of 2013?" thread a little while back.. I added a fair few books to my TBR pile after reading through that thread

One of my best reads recently was The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Even if you've seen the movie, I highly recommend the book. It's got great characterization, some history, and a little bit of intrigue/mystery.

I honestly didn't think a book about a British butler in pre-WWII England would interest me as I usually go for SF and Fantasy, but the first few pages about the butler driving a car through the English countryside really charmed me.

Really well written, and features a unique take on the unreliable narrator as sometimes what he says is so obviously what's not really happening and that's part of the books charm and also sadness, but that goes to the heart of one of the major themes in the book (duty versus living your own life). Moving stuff.

flyingturtle - thanks. i'm going to give it a try.

just finishing up three parts dead. i wouldn't call it a 5 star book, but a solid 4.5er. one of my 5 star books, btw, is michelle west's "the broken crown", book one of the sun sword series.

A 90% off code was too good to miss. I'm not sure when I'll get to read it.

Need a good '5-star' book!

I'm currently reading The Golem and the Jinni and it is absolutely enchanting.

I've never read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell but I read that Wecker's novel is similar to it.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm interested in its premise so I'm going to give this one a shot and add it to my tbr list. I'll also add that Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone. I may need to bookmark this thread for possible updates.

Agreed. A great read.

These both rate five stars for me:
Genesis by Eduardo Galeano
Genesis by Bernhard Beckett

Don't ask me what the coincidence is with the name, but they are both great reads.
