I asked amazon about extra discounts for students. Nope.

They replied that the kindle hd & hdx would be on sale thru PST Feb. 8, 2014, or while supplies last. Are they trying to purge inventory? is there a new model coming?
Having a sale until all inventory is gone sounds strange.

By the way I ended up buying the PW2 from Staples, they had it on sale 2/13- 2/15. I was going to ask for a price match (from Best Buy), but they had a private store sale I guess....

I emailed Amazon, and they said they honor the warranty for 1 year with replacement if problems. They also will help you answer any questions or problems you have.

I think many of those who buy extended warranties on these do so for the accidental damage coverage, rather than out of fear of the electronics failing. It's not at all hard to break an e-ink screen, and $20-30 or so for two years coverage against damage from falls or spills into water makes sense to some.

I could see that if you take it out of the house. Mine never leaves home so I don't need it. Only think I drop is my cell phone and it usually is on concrete too But haven't broke any yet.
