You both make good points (even though I know Uschiekid was joking!) but there are people who still want some customisation options, but for it to be kept fairly simple. So it's not as easy as just saying, stay out of the settings section. It really is pretty impossible to please everyone....

You can add them without effecting your Kobo software in any way. In fact the alternative readers launch in the same manner as selecting a book.

I have tried that procedure repeatedly, and can never make step 6 work. For me, it just does nothing.

The process that makes step 6 work is the same process as adding an ebook to your device from your PC. It is done by the Kobo software that comes with your device. If you have to start over again you need to remove the .png files from the device and start again at step 1.

If you mean that poking the full page image does not launch anything, that is how it is expected to work and you should return to your home page and reconnect to your PC to continue with step 7.
