It doesn't surprise me that the gentleman would be using an ereader at age 87. With the fact of how light weight they are and how the font can be enlarged ereaders are an ideal device for older readers. I mean there are the extra large print books we've all seen at libraries, but larger print = more paper and therefore more weight and they only have so many books in the extra large print as well since they take up more space and are probably more expensive for the library to purchase. With ebooks one size fits all since the reader can adjust the size of the font to suit their individual needs.

I'm nearly 67 and my problems are near sighted/far sighted and the beginnings of a cataract in my left eye. I'm not comfortable reading the smaller type in a paper book, even with reading glasses. My Kindles are really what keep me reading. |

Dad is 88, mom is 87. Mom has been reading longer on an e-reader, but dad has finally become one of us!
Thanks for all the western suggestions. Dad likes westerns, and I haven't a clue about them. S |

Speaking of Westerns, the audiobook version of Shane, by Jack Schaefer, read by Grover Gardner, is currently on sale at Downpour for $4.95. I listened to this one last year and really enjoyed it.

I went back to Munsey's and found that in all there are some 260 westerns among their holdings. Enough to keep anyone occupied for a while I would imagine. Even if not all of them are novel length reads.

Sorry to take so long to get back to this thread... swamped with work.
I'll check out my father's library this weekend. I know he had Zane Grey, Louis L'amour and a few others as part of a couple anthologies. and forward all the suggestions. BTW, he has a Kindle 2 and a KDX (passed on from me). He much prefers reading on the Kindles and really only likes the tablet for solitaire, taking and viewing photos and the occasional Google Hangout call to my Aunt (she has a Kindle 3 and original Kindle Fire). |

Wildside Press has a number of western "Megapacks" for 99 cents. There are no tables of content (at least on the SF ones I bought) but the price is right. Even if you don't buy you may get some ideas of authors to look for, including Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs who both wrote westerns even though they are not known for them.

Johnston McCulley is another one who wrote some western fictions. He also wrote "The Curse of Capistrano" on which the Zorro movies are based.

Certainly not "classic," by any means, but I wouldn't skip James D. Best's various "Steve Dancy Tales" books just because they're new. I enjoy them (as does my nearly 80-yr-old father--whose TV never gets changed from Encore's Westerns channel!).
