Obviously not. But some people want to carry more than 1,000 books around with them, so why shouldn't they?

I must admit that if I could get an ebook reader that fully integrated with calibre (i.e. changes to either synced, and also allowed custom metadata like calibre does), and had the quick search and sorting capabilities of calibre, I'd rather like to have my whole library on my ebook reader too.

I only have a subset of my library on my reader - the 40 or so books that are next on my TBR list. It would be nice to have the lot, in case I want to look something up in one of the others, or to show someone something, or just to re-read something when something makes me think of a particular book.

Ebook readers are certainly not perfect yet, and not being able to easily handle a library of tens of thousands of books is one of the things that they lack so far.

Indeed. The previous poster seems to be expressing surprise that anyone could manage with a mere thousand books on their reader. I'm sure that it's entirely adequate for the overwhelming majority of readers.

If you do have a large library and want to carry it all around, the simple answer is the Kindle App on a tablet. Even the cheapest tablet generally has 8GB of storage space, and the Kindle App has no problem at all with many thousands of books.

all good points. I realize I'm one of the few but I'd like to use e-ink with 8-16gb of available storage

The thing to remember is that Amazon sell the eInk Kindle at cost price, as a device for Amazon content consumption. They have no incentive whatsoever to encourage you to sideload many thousands of books. I very much doubt we'll ever see an eInk Kindle with large storage, for that reason.

If you want large storage, you'd perhaps be better off with a device which isn't associated with a bookstore that has an SD card slot. Pocketbook and Onyx both make some attractive readers. You will pay a considerable premium for such a device, though, because it's not being subsidised by a bookstore as the Kindle is.

But yeah. SD card enabled readers. Check 'em out.

Has anyone from outside Japan been able to purchase the Japanese PW2 with 4GB of storage?

Amazon "national" sites won't ship Kindles to addresses outside their areas of operation. You'd need to either find someone in Japan to buy one for you, or use a forwarding service.

Yes the SD card slot option is wonderful. But remember, just because it has one and can hold thousands, any eink reader I have heard of has a slow processor, and putting thousands of books on it results in a slow ereader. So unless you are very patient, it really is better to keep a few hundred on an eink reader, rather than a few thousand.

Tablets are a different ball game! I have over 5000 on my Nook HD, and duplicated on my Nexus 7. I should do that with my Fire, too. No slow down whatsoever. And now that the new Fire HD has collections, much easier to manage.

I don't follow your reasoning. When you're actually READING a book, the number of books on the reader should have no impact whatsoever on the speed of the device. Why would it? The only thing that will be slower with a lot of books will be operations like doing a global search.

I have something like 900 books on my PW2, and it's no slower to use with 900 books than it was with 100.

Yes, you are correct. When actually reading, there is nothing slow. It is in other areas that eink is slow, when too many books are on a device.

ETA but as you don't use collections, Harry, I'm sure you wouldn't notice any slowness at all.

@all -- hope this isn't hi-jacking the thread

I'm also in a quandary about buying my 3rd Kindle (probably the PW) to replace my Touch, but not because of lack of on board storage; I side load Calibre-converted epubs all the time, and rarely buy a book. Typically there's only the 100 or so on the KT that I want access to anyway.

My issue is with the lack of decent collections management. It drives me up the wall to have to assign one book at a time to a collection using the KT. If Amazon comes up with a way to use a \Documents\collection\ ... structure and just make the collections on the fly, I'd buy another one today

It's there a calibre plugin for this?

Why would using collections make the Kindle run more slowly? Collections are simply tags associated with files.

Only if you jailbreak the Kindle. On all Kindles after the Kindle Keyboard, collections are stored in the "internal" partition, not the user-mounted one, so external tools can't access it. Probably because on the earlier Kindles it was all too easy to accidentally delete the file storing the collections information and lose everything.
