Keep going long enough and you can get rid of the tiles. As you remove tiles, they will be replaced by tiles that slid off the view so just persevere. After using DavidFor's Kobo Utilities to remove the sync tile, I can get the home screen down to a single large gray tile saying "Reserved for your next great read" with "Add a book" at the bottom of the tile. See screen shot for an example.

Please note that most activities will add a tile to the home screen so the screen will not stay empty long.

Your home screen is displaying what it is programed to display. Only way your home screen will not display more than the book your reading is if that is the only book loaded in your library. Book your reading is at it's own area. Books recently added is displayed first then books recently read or opened.

When you touch word Library on home screen the library will be displayed. Library has list of books with or without book cover thumb nails. How the library is sorted is by Author, by Title, by Recently Read, by File Size or by File Type. Touch words by ______ to change how your library is sorted. Touch wrench at bottom right corner of a library page to change how library is displayed.

How do I restore widgets or tiles on a Kobo Touch home screen,

I used to have a Library widget and a few others like a `Reading Stats` widget. The Library widget randomly disappeared a few days ago.

The tiles change as you do something. Open a book, and the book tile appears. Open a book from a shelf, and the shelf tile appears. The "Reading stats" should appear when you finish a book. And the library tile will appear when you put new books on the device.

Tiles move off the home screen either because you dismiss them, or other tiles push them off. They can be brought back if you dismiss other tiles.

The 'reading stats' tile did reappear after I opened a book and returned to the home screen, but the library tile hasn't.

I dismissed all the book tiles, leaving only the 'sync' tile on the home screen, but the library tile is nowhere to be found.

I added a book, still no library tile. I know I didn't delete it. hmm..

Try adding more books in one go. I forgot that when only one new book is found, it puts that book in its own tile with "new" underneath it. I think that also happens with two books but with three or more the library tile is displayed. Or if you are using an external SD card, eject it, wait for the screen to flash and put it back in. That should display the library tile.

Awesome, Thanks very much, that did it. I added 4 books (dragging and dropping, not through kobo or calibre) and the Library tile is back.
