Maybe it's time to open a tinfoil hat shop, looks like the demand would be over the roof!

Why on earth would they give you the setting to change the feature at all if they were only planning to take it away later?

Awareness of the product and people wanting better integration may lead more people to use Google+. In all likelihood most people are unaware of the privacy implications, don't care about the privacy implications, or are too invested in their Gmail account to find an alternative provider.

Google+Privacy=Paradox
Anyone expecting any sort of privacy in Google`s domain is just naive in my view. |

Being distinctly old-fashioned (I can recall the excitement of the 2086 chip...) I would expect all those communications privacy settings would be "off" by default, and you have to consciously turn on any one you want to use or allow. I don't use gmail or any other free service; and I don't even use an email client. I work directly in the mailbox of my ISP. Not perfect, but it works for me.
On being computer naive, well, let's be objective: 90 percent or more of people who rush onto the web from their new smartphones/tablets/digital semaphore/discworld clacks are hopelessly computer naive. They have no protection because the default is usually no protection. Sites like facebook, twitter, youtube etc want you to hang everything out in public because they want the traffic, the more traffic the better, and the free content. They are in effect publishers, whose writers/photographers/etceteras GIVE them the content on which they can hang their profitable ads. Don't mind me grumbling a bit. |

Nobody is forced to stay ignorant of the policies/tactics of social media. The times, they are a-changin'. Adapt or face the consequences. If you want privacy, be a private person.
