Make sure you're not in Private Browsing mode - in private browsing mode, passwords aren't saved. This is for iPhone, iPad should be similar: http://osxdaily.com/2013/10/19/priva...ng-safari-ios/

Thanks for the thought, but if I tap on the URL in a web page, my keyboard comes up and that's it. None of the other icons that that article refer to come up, so there's nothing to tap.

Go to Settings --> General --> Restrictions. If it is set to OFF, the Private button should appear in the keyboard for Safari. If Restrictions are On it might not appear.

Well, eureka! In General, my restrictions were off, but I hadn't noticed that "Private" button off to the left on the keyboard. When I pressed that, it asked me if exiting the private mode whether I wanted to save any of the tabs and just closed it when I said no.
When I signed on to Mobileread again, it asked me whether I wanted to save the info to my Keychain so that I could access it across devices. The other options didn't look like they'd be productive, so I said yes. And now that User Name and password on Mobileread are being retained. So thanks, Jack, and you too, kguil, for your help in pointing Jack to the right solution. I'll send another email to the supervisor so he has a clue. Jim |

I did send my email, and pointed out that a search in the iPad user guide finds no mention of any "private" mode in the browser. How would you know it even existed?

Glad to help. In the future, if you want to turn on/off private mode in Safari, tap the plus button on top to open a new tab and at the bottom you'll see a "Private" button.
