I don't quite agree with your definitions of cover and case, though I understand what you're talking about.

My Sony PRS-T1 has a silicone skin and has a CaseLogic hard-sided zipper case, but is only in the case when I'm transporting it. However, my T1 is relegated to being my "home machine" (like my desktop computer) now that I have my Kobo Mini.

My Kobo Mini has a beautiful leather cover (case? It's surrounded on all sides and extends about 1/8" past the ereader so all edges are protected, but doesn't have a zipper).

Given the size and weight of my T1, I really like to read with it only in its silicone skin (no cover). However, the Kobo Mini is so small and light I don't mind the cover (and the leather feels really nice to hold).

I'd consider those covers 1), since they don't really prevent edge intrusion. I hate it when the ballpoint pen in my briefcase gets between the cover and the screen. [shudder]

*EVA = Ethylene Vinyl Acetate; technically just the resin, the matrix is usually some kind of cloth or fiber.
My covers have an inflexible front and back, and a spine. That is both the cover for my Sony and the cover for my HTC.

For me, a cover is something that covers at least the front of your device and can be opened like a book.
A sleeve is a softisch pouch with one open side. You must remove the device from it before you can use it.
A case is a box which also completely encloses your device but is made of a hard material (metal, hard plastic).

And a protector is something that either covers the front of the device or the back of the device and won't be removed (think screen protector or one of those silicone thingies you put on to protect the casing of the device itself).
