I've owned all of the tablets you're considering except the newest generation Fire HDX and Nexus 7. In my opinion, for a combination of price and features, you can't beat the Nook HD or HD+.

You may be interested in Nate Hoffelder's newly updated review of the HD+: http://www.the-digital-reader.com/20.../#.UsWA1TaA3OE

As he mentions, rooting it or running a dual-boot Android OS on an SD card makes it much more versatile. I use this dual-boot AFN card in mine: http://www.androidfornook.com/product-info

The Kindle for Android app works great with Kindle books and even without rooting it, you have access to GooglePlay apps. Also, I far prefer the 9" screen to my 7" Kindle Fires and Nexus 7.

It depends on whether you want your reading activity front and center. for 30$ more, the nexus 7 gives you a kind of crappy rear facing camera and gps and stock android (it probably has kitkat by now). Both processors are quad core, but the kobo's is slightly faster at 1.7 ghz vs the nexus' 1.5.
If you don't like the kobo ui, then you can get a launcher off of google play.

On the kobo, you can download the kindle android app but not nook. You can allow downloading apps from unknown sources in settings, then go to goodereader.com, which features an app store. From there, you can get nook.
I'm really geeky, so I know how it can be choosing a device! I would say, the nexus does have a slight edge, but the kobo has 30$ savings. Odds are you have a phone with a better camera than the nexus.
Both are great devices! Tell us what you choose!
(I have kobo arc 10 hd! Awesome tablet!)
