1 star: 0
so my average is 3.27 - I am very stingy with 5 stars, so I don't think I can complain, at least I managed to steer clear of total failures!

I guess I rated most of the books I read as above average because I don't start a book unless I'm fairly certain I will really like it. I didn't finish several books, but I also didn't count or rate them. They would have been the 1-star reads had I been open to self-torture.

I don't think I've been less discerning this year, but I have been more careful about picking my reads. Also, in 2012 I did an experiment of reading at least one self-published book a month, several of them picked completely randomly on the basis of "free on Amazon and looked vaguely interesting", so that had a small effect as well.

Doing this reconciliation has pointed up a couple of books I haven't finished reading being counted in my 2013 challenge total. Not sure how they got marked off as read in July 2013 when they were on my 2012 challenge list, and I had not finished them...?

I may have been a little generous with some of the ratings, but I think it's a fair reflection of my reading experience this year.

abandoned: 7 (they weren't bad books, just not my style)

Average rating: 3.27 (not counting the abandoned books)

The ratings are from my goodreads account, added after I finished each book. When I counted them for this post I saw some interesting things: the first book in a series I like usually has a higher score than the next books (not necessarily because it's better, but because the novelty of the series has worn off after it and I tend to round down when I get to rate the next books) and I seem to be far less critical of fantasy books.
