I seem to remember mentioning this problem with a cable I'd been using while talking with Amazon CS about a different problem. They sent me a new one. Having purchased at least 8 Kindles over the years I've got a lifetime supply now. None of the other cables have disintegrated.

For what it's worth, my K3's cable crumbled as well. So far it is the only cable I have had that happen to.
Perhaps some day I'll do an inventory of my vast cable collection. I'm sure I have cables from devices that are long gone. |

I don't think it is the climate either, as I have yet to see any other leads experience the same problem - despite their being left lying around in indirect sunlight and high humidity.
As regards price, I'm pretty certain I can buy it a bit cheaper locally. I'm NOT living in a particularly expensive country. We don't have Radioshack here - but we do have a sort of local inexpensive equivalent. |

I have a few Dollar Store cables. While shorter they seem just as reliable and sturdier. The price is right and there is always a wide variety.

Yes! A USB to Micro USB lead does the trick, and can be bought here at less than Amazon.com prices. Thanks all for your input! :-)
Funnily enough, I found another lead exhibiting this problem today, after I emptied the glovebox of my Reliant Robin ;-) (see my avatar) prior to having it washed. It's an FM transmitter that works off the cigar-lighter ;-), and it has a spring-coiled lead with a stereo jack that you can plug into the likes of say an MP3 player. You can plug in your mobile sound device and it will transmit to an FM frequency on your car hi-fi ;-) The insulation on the lead between the jack and the spring-coil is cracking. It's hardly used, since I have found it much easier to just use an SD card-player on the hi-fi. And it's always been kept in the dark. So again, I suspect it's the case that some (perhaps) Chinese factories have been known to use slightly inferior insulation plastic on some models.
