It appears, according to the link CWatkinsNash posted above, that different sections of the novel constituted the control. (eg, boring sections did not have the same effect as exciting sections.)

Because Hollyweird just can't do a good job presenting the story JUST as the Author wrote it

Do I have to have a reason? How about the fact that its my favorite activity. I have gone electronic with my novels out of necessity, my printed book library was getting ready to toss me out of the house becauase the library got soo big.

As others have said, limited sample size and no control make this a study of limited value. On top of that, there's no evidence in the study (mainly because that wasn't the purpose of the study) that increased connectedness in the brains of the participants had any tangible advantage or effect.
I've seen this story a few places, and I don't see what makes it newsworthy. Essentially, the takeaway here is that novels may or may not have a lasting affect on the brain, and that affect may or may not translate into...something. Maybe further studies could reveal something interesting, but right now there's nothing here. |

I believe that the informational value of books is instrinsically connected to the medium and we (at least me) just happen to read for the entertaining value of it. If I were forced to read books I might not enjoy it as I do now as it would damage the fun out of reading.
