In my county in metro Atlanta - we have lovely library buildings - and quite a few of them to boot - but not many books - that's a different set of funding. I know about ILL - but - I live 30 minutes from a library - so it's pretty much a hassle.

I have to say, the thing I miss almost most of all (other than being able to sleep late every day) about college, was the huge library - 6 stories of books. What an absolute delight to go in and just browse - find the psychology floor, and just go through all the books and periodicals - all that information in one place.

Now, I'm out in the middle of no where - so no large universities within an hour drive (if I could handle Atlanta traffic anyway). Someday, after we retire, I want to move to a university town - large school, somewhat rural area by the beach - and just soak up the books. But that's over 25 years off too.

A card catalog with cards is so out of date these days. Computerize the catalog like any good library.

It could be worth enquiring about subscribing to a university library in order to access its electonic resources. Many journals are available via Jstor.
The university from which you graduated may have a reduced rate for alumni. It could be worth an email...
