From what I've seen, 9 years is the dividing line.
An avid reader 9 year old will get a few good years off an eink reader in a protective folio case. Younger than that and it will be tricky. Cheap LCD tablets should be expected to last a year with kinds 6-8.
Younger still and it is Russian roulette with the dropsies; they will drop and you'll see how robust the screen is.
The problem with eink is they are thinner than lcd panels (no backlighting or reinforcement for same) and flexing forces that lcds can tolerate will break them.

I'd have a rule that they don't use it when eating as crumbs on the screen can make the touch function not work well.
