Honestly, I was surprised anybody buys it. I thought it was strictly an underground, campus and internet, thing.
Only copy I ever saw, back in the day, was a faded copy of a copy xerograph.

It's the sort of book that you might find sold next to old army field manuals and the Turner Diaries. The kind of things that appeal to Timothy McVeigh wannabes.

not only is it widely available, but updated instructions for more modern/refined methods of destruction are easily obtainable online now. Even if The Cookbook and all of its information could be magically erased from public access, it wouldn't matter.

Yep. The "pressure cooker" bombs of Boston come to mind. The internet makes info. (both good and bad) very widely available.

By going public with his remorse, the author has attracted attention to his book. Since the book is readily available for free download, he has undoubtedly put it in the hands of the people he says he wants it kept from. Assuming he is not less intelligent than I am, this is almost certainly a ploy to renew his fame -- perhaps in hope of capitalizing on the subject matter in these troubled times. I suspect a book or movie will come out of this. Once an anarchist, always an anarchist.

Those anarchists love their movie deals. Actually yeah, may very well be doing this for personal notoriety, but my guess is it's no more than a bit of vanity. I doubt he stands to gain anything material at this point, even if he wanted to. Plus it sounds like he's mellowed out with age, as do many people who had strong political views in their youth. I actually have a hard copy of the book, which I bought as a teenager, somewhere.

You don't need the cookbook for that. A complete description of thermite, formula, recipe and methods was in my grade 13 chemistry text. That was in 1962. Don't know what they teach now.

If one wants a text on this sort of thing, get a book:

- authored by professionals
- tested and known to work
- safe (in terms of following directions accurately)
- legitimately freely available

TM 31-210 the U.S. Army's Improvised Munition Handbook (be sure to obey all applicable local laws).

I used to be friends with a fella who wanted to work for the CIA* and toted this book around high school. The copy appeared to be professionally published.

* Later I think he actually did get an internship with them. I haven't heard from him since

My high school had a copy in its library, back in the 1970s. My best friend had it signed out half the time. That would be the guy who inadvertently set off a gunpowder "volcano" in the family oven, and a can of rocket fuel mixture on the stove (showering the ceiling and cupboards with molten slag). Fun times!
