No, it was something else. I don't want to get into specific details that may lead others towards information which, although you made public, is your own. I will rush to say I did not hunt it out, it was seen quite by chance in a discussion related to recall that I had wondered previously about myself, and had also read the original article mentioned. (See, my recall is good ![]() (Send me a PM if where that is unclear and you would like clarification). From that, I also understand that when you say "school" that is likely to be at a more advanced level than one might assume. Last edited by AnotherCat; 12-22-2013 at 11:24 PM. |

<<Rather than making accusations having the the smell of tar and feathering, they being based on assumptions of which the accusers are certain of but which may be false,>>
I just want to add that I've gotten free self-published books (offered free by the author) from Amazon that have this same problem, with book titles/page numbers inserted within the text. This happens when self-published authors don't know what they are doing in formatting their eBooks and don't even bother to check their book after it is published on Amazon. So it isn't just PDFs or old out of copyright scanned books where this happens. And it certainly doesn't automatically mean that anyone is doing anything illegal. I've never downloaded an illegal book in my life and I've seen it several times. <<AFAIk there is no legal way to acquire an e-book version of even an out-of-print copy unless you actually own it & scan it yourself>> I think you are confusing 'out-of-print' with 'out-of-copyright'. What you said is not my understanding at all and I've done quite a bit of reading on this subject - only because I like to do the right thing, not because I'm trying to get around the law. |

Hitch, I guess my response was unclear (or just plain poorly written) because I agree with what you said about out-of-copyright books.
I think it stems from different readings of the op's clarification: <<actually the few the books I have obtained this way (all of 3) were all old out of print books and unavailable to buy which I was able to find in PDF format, >> Some were interpreting this to mean "out-of-print but still in copyright" while I was interpreting this to mean "out-of-print and NOT in copyright". I've gotten several 150-year-old out-of-print books on an obscure subject from Internet Archives and they always indicate that they've checked the copyright status so that type of situation was my first thought when I read his comment. Who knows what he/she really meant, but it didn't seem right to automatically assume that he/she was doing something illegal. |
