Thanks for all the help - I may still look for another solution/ereader, but I'm fixed for now between my Kindle keyboard and small Android tablet, and maybe figuring out the PW2 problem - I just hate to carry so many gadgets along, would like just one that does everything - like that's gonna happen! |

There's something very wrong there. Have you tried using a different USB cable? Cable problems can cause funnies like this.

Yeah, I just changed cables and scanned for bad memory. Still now working. I'm thinking it is for sure the PW2 - am now wondering if there is something limiting it as I have the advertising version and have turned off wifi so as not to get the latest update. Ok, so I'll take this to the Kindle forum - sigh.

Have you tried a factory reset?

If I do won't I have to connect to Amazon? I don't want to do that as I'd get the Collections problem on the newer update. I haven't tried a restart, so I'll try that next. If all else fails, either send it back for a replacement or update it and jb it.

This might be a dumb question, but could you be hitting the issue with windows and a limit to the number of books saved in the Root directory? Are you saving directly to the main directory (e.g., F:\) instead of a folder within the directory (e.g., F:\Books\)?

Have you looked at the size of the individual files? They'd have to be pretty big files for 200+ books to max out the memory.

An excellent suggestion, but on the Kindle books are stored in a folder called "documents", not in the root, so the 64-file limit on the number of items in the root folder doesn't apply.

Great idea! Just started doing that - turns out I have about 10 files that were over 200mb each (originally converted in Calibre) - just re-converted them in Calibre and they are about 50mb each - still much larger than all the other books. Now to figure out what Calibre conversion (or my fiddling with Calibre) is doing to cause this in just these books. BTW - these are fiction, not particularly long books, no pictures or diagrams in them.

Where did these books originally come from?

I'm trying to figure that out. I've had computers and ebooks for years - early on I wasn't so careful about keeping track of where I bought them. They aren't Amazon and I'm thinking I got some of them from a site that is no longer in business. I'll see, today, if I can't find them in my remembered purchased sites, whether they are worth rebuying - they are on my favorites list, so I'll probably rebuy over time.
Such a simple solution - not only does it take a village to raise a child - but it takes a wonderful forum with wonderful people to figure out gadget stuff! Thanks to everyone who commented - you all helped even if the answer wasn't from you! |

SD card support, supports lots of file formats out of box, highly customizable, has quite a few third party stuff, such as dictionaries, themes (GUI modifications), even programs. The PocketBook is an open system, so you can install fonts and other stuff withou any hacking. Just copy to a directory. The only downside is that it is only officially sold in Europe and thus has higher price than PW2. |

The main reason it's more expensive that the PW2 is that the PW2 is basically sold at cost price, with Amazon making money from selling content. Pocketbook have to make money on the actual device.

A number of months ago I was browsing through the files on my Paperwhite and discovered a bunch of garbage files in some of the hidden folders and under /system. I recovered about 300MB after (carefully) deleting them (they had suspiciously old dates and filenames that referred to items that were no longer on the Kindle). Unfortunately I don't remember the details. They were probably left around after abnormal restarts (of which I had a few in the first months I had the PW), or possibly bugs that caused them to remain around when they should have been deleted.
I've never used calibre with my Paperwhite, and only rarely transfer files over the cable, so whatever the problem was it was, it was Amazon's doing. But you might look through and check. Make sure you set Explorer/Finder to view hidden folders/files. |
