George Bird Grinnell books are all PD I think
George Bird Grinnell (September 20, 1849 – April 11, 1938) was an American anthropologist, historian, naturalist, and writer. Grinnell was born in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in 1870 and a Ph.D. in 1880. Originally specializing in zoology, he became a prominent early conservationist and student of Native American life. Grinnell has been recognized for his influence on public opinion and work on legislation to preserve the American buffalo.

@Mike L Thank you for recommending Stephen E. Ambrose's Undaunted Courage. I read a summary of the book and I just got it and I cannot wait to read it. I will be starting it after I finish my current read.

And then I'll read Dee Brown's Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee since a lot of you have recommended it. Then hopefully I'll get to the other recommendations.

Thanks again, all!

The Oregon Historical Society has a search box in the upper right that'll bring up some old documents for your online perusal -- try Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea. The bottom of their blurbs has a 'for further reading' area, although all the ones I checked were print books.

If you enjoy Ambrose's book (and I'm sure you will), you might want to look at Gary E. Moulton's abridgement of his own mammoth The Definitive Journals of Lewis & Clark (and this links to a set at an amazingly good price).

The Lewis and Clark Journals (Abridged Edition): An American Epic of Discovery

I have the Definitive Journals in paper, but the 12 volumes are really only interesting to researchers. The Abridged version is a delight to read and Mr. Moultan has kept the original idiosyncratic spellings (especially of William Clark).
