I actually did manage to buy it with my Canadian address. I certainly don't need more books to read, but how could I pass up a deal like that?

I remember I read Ender's Game years ago, but never got around to the sequels. So, this is great to have.

(Oh boy, a 1600 page ebook. Have to figure out how to use that epub split plugin)

There looks to be some kind of SFGateway/Gollancz sale going on in the UK again. Items on my Amazon wishlists by Arthur C Clarke, Ursula Le Guin and Keith Roberts were all reduced to £2.99 this morning. I haven't had chance to investigate further, but I thought I'd mention it.

Yes, lots of good stuff at £2.99. I believe this link includes most of the books on sale.

Death of Kings by Bernard Cornwell [HarperCollins] is $1.99 at all major retailers.

Quote:
The fate of a new nation rests in the hands of a reluctant warrior in this thrilling sixth volume in the acclaimed New York Times bestselling Saxon Tales series.

As the ninth century wanes, Alfred the Great lies dying, his dream of a unified England in danger and his kingdom on the brink of chaos. While his son, Edward, has been named his successor, there are other Saxon claimants to the throne—as well as ambitious pagan Vikings to the north.

Uhtred, the Saxon-born, Viking-raised warrior, whose life seems to shadow the making of England itself, is torn between his vows to Alfred and his desire to reclaim his long-lost ancestral lands and castle in the north. As the king's warrior, he is duty-bound, but Alfred's reign is nearing its end, and Uhtred has sworn no oath to the crown prince. Despite his long years of service, Uhtred is still loath to commit to the old king's Saxon cause of a united and Christian England. Now he must make a momentous decision, one that will forever transform his life . . . and the course of history: take up arms—and Alfred's mantle—or lay down his sword and allow the dream of a unified kingdom to fall into oblivion.

A harrowing story of the power of tribal commitment and the dilemma of divided loyalties, Death of Kings is the latest chapter in the epic saga of the making of England, magnificently brought to life by "the reigning king of historical fiction" (USA Today).

An excellent book, certainly, but a straightforward historical novel, to my mind. Why do you consider it to be fantasy, if you'll forgive my asking?

It was the closest category for a medieval fiction title I could find.

Choices are romance, horror, children, mystery, non-fiction, cookbook and Christian.

You can just put it in its own thread if it doesn't fit in. It's certainly a bargain and therefore entirely appropriate for the forum; I just don't personally think it's fantasy.

Dragonwriter: A Tribute to Anne McCaffrey and Pern is $2.99 at Amazon US
Quote:
When Anne McCaffrey passed in November 2011, it was not only those closest to her who mourned her death; legions of readers also felt the loss deeply. The pioneering science fiction author behind the Dragonriders of Pern® series crafted intricate stories, enthralling worlds, and strong heroines that profoundly impacted the science fiction community and genre.

In Dragonwriter, Anne’s son and Pern writer Todd McCaffrey collects memories and stories about the beloved author, along with insights into her writing and legacy, from those who knew her best. Nebula Award–winner Elizabeth Moon relates the lessons she learned from Pern’s Lessa (and from Lessa’s creator); Hugo Award–winner David Brin recalls Anne’s steadfast belief that the world to come will be better than the one before; legendary SFF artist Michael Whelan shares (and tells stories about) never-before-published Pern sketches from his archives; and more.

Join Anne’s co-writers, fellow science fiction authors, family, and friends in remembering her life, and exploring how her mind and pen shaped not only the Weyrs of Pern, but also the literary landscape as we know it.

Contributors include:

• Angelina Adams
• David Brin
• David Gerrold
• John Goodwin
• Janis Ian
• Alec Johnson
• Georgeanne Kennedy

One of Amazon US's Kindle daily deals today is Memoirs Found in a Bathtub by Stanislaw Lem for $1.99 (Whispersync for Voice for another $1.99)
Quote:
The year is 3149, and a vast paper destroying blight-papyralysis-has obliterated much of the planet's written history. However, these rare memoirs, preserved for centuries in a volcanic rock, record the strange life of a man trapped in a hermetically sealed underground community. Translated by Michael Kandel and Christine Rose.

Stanislaw Lem is the most widely translated and best known science fiction author writing outside of the English language. Winner of the Kafka Prize, he is a contributor to many magazines, including the New Yorker, and he is the author of numerous works, including Solaris.

Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan is $1.99 on the Kindle store.

This has been on sale at $1.99 since November, but I just learned about it from the Functional Nerds podcast. New author, this sounds interesting, an epic fantasy set in an era with guns.

Quote:
In a rich, distinctive world that mixes magic with technology, who could stand against mages that control gunpowder and bullets? PROMISE OF BLOOD is the start of a new epic fantasy series from Brian McClellan.
