This may be because I'm on my work's Mackbook, don't know if Calibre loses tools in the OS X version (usually a Windows guy)... but there's no "Polish Book" option when right clicking in the library

Let me add a SS o you see what I see:

And I can't really see this particular book with the calibre viewer because of the mentioned DRM :/

You have an old version of Calibre. You'll need to update it to get the Polish books features.

Upgrading from Older versions REQUIRE that you ADD the Icon to where you want it.
Calibre is a good neighbor and does not mess with your existing configuration.

Preferences:Toolbar: <select bar>: Add icon from the Left to the right

I see... IO was looking for it in the right click menu.. thanks!

Soooo.. that didn't work! Heh. Trying to check "update cover" on the Polish tool I get a "FAILED" message. clicking for details I get:

Quote:
Polish The Name of the Wind: The Kingkiller Chronicle: Day One
Python function terminated unexpectedly: This file is locked with DRM. It cannot be edited.
and then a bunch of stuff I'm guessing is irrelevant since the issue is with DRM :/

As a general rule if a book has DRM, then Calibre cannot change it in any way. The only actions being to store it and send it to a device/folder. This is one of the reasons many people remove DRM even from books they have legally bought.

I GOT IT DONE!!!

I did *not* have to mess with the DRM and still was able to change the cover. All you need to do is pretty much follow eschwartz's great instructions. I wish I could give him 42million karma. Thanks again, man(or ma'am)!!

Thanks everyone else for their patience, too!

You can still give me as much as you are allowed to...

Good to hear you got it working. These file clashes are a pain, aren't they?

And so is penguin for not giving us real covers.

Hopefully, you learned something awesome about how everything works, of course, to aid you in your future travels....

Did I mention my custom columns for saving Amazon books back to the right place on my kindle? If you do this for a lot of books, you may want to follow some more instructions:

create a custom column called, say, "origfile" and save the original filename for all your amazon books in it.

Use this template in your Device customization for Kindle, in the save template:

Code:
program:
ifempty(
	field('#file'),
	template('[[author_sort:sublist(0,1,&)]]/[[title]] - [[authors:sublist(0,1,&)]]')
)
Then calibre will automatically save books to the filename specified in the "file" custom column, and if not will use the default save pattern. All Amazon books are saved back to where Amazon would place it, which means all your .sdrs match up!

WARNING: disable "send page number information when sending books" or your page numbers painstakingly compiled by Amazon get overwritten with random guesses.

Although I did tweak it to only use the first author if there are multiple.

Tried and tested for perfect calibre changes to your Amazonized books

First I'm glad you got it working and kudos and karma to eschwartz for supplying precise instructions.

Now to be fair to theducks you never "started asking if it was at all possible to edit the cover without affecting DRM." As a matter of fact DRM wasn't mentioned by you until post 20 which was the post theducks responded to.

Congrats again on getting your device working the way you like.

When I said in Post #7 that I wanted it "WITHOUT losing the Amazon features like X-Ray and Sync" I was working on the assumption that you need an official Amazon file, ie with DRM, for these features to work. If there's a way to have those features without an official Amazon file, I'm sure it's against the guidelines to discuss here anyway.

Thanks for the congrats.

You absolutely do not need DRM for Amazon features to work. I have liberated all my books and pretty much use calibre exclusively to add them, except when I first download. All are added using my custom save template, and as long as the sdr matches up with the azw(3) you get the features. For example, many books are now being sold without DRM. I assure you the features still work with them.

Once the reader has decrypted the book, it is seen exactly the same as if it has no DRM

What matters is, don't convert the book, or it will in fact be a different book but with the same words/formatting/ToC/cover/etc. and naturally, the features will be broken.

And you could hack the features, too, to create a homemade X-Ray, apnx, phl, etc. There are actually projects to do several of these already. For example, calibre by default generates pseudo-pagenumbers for your books with src/calibre/devices/kindle/apnx.py and at http://www.xunwang.me/xray/ you can create X-Ray files with some limitations. As long as the book has the same offsets, though, which DRM does not affect, all feature files will mesh properly.

.
But you have to have BOUGHT the book from amazon? Surely. you will not get x-ray & sync if say you buy an epub from another store & convert it ?

PS what's an sdr ? update - forget that question, already answered in your post #10
