My son has enjoyed the "Junior Jedi Knight" Star Wars books.
I tend to get the various series confused...I think he's currently into "Young Jedi Knights" which is for slightly older kids and feature a young pair of brother and sister twins (Han and Leia's kids) and "Junior Jedi Knights" was the series for the even younger set, featuring the twin's younger brother. Can't recall if there were girls featured in that series or not. Worth a look, though. |

QuantumIquana,
Does it have to be novels? There are some short stories I could recommend. They have the advantage of being able to be read in one sitting (or so). Here are a few I could recommend (All with strong woment characters). From the Heinlein short stories. Let There Be Light Elsewhen The Menace From Earth C.L.Moore No Woman Born |

Not SF of course, I was totally in love with Louisa May Alcott's the Story Girl books when I was about that age. I much preferred them to the Anne books and compared to today they almost seem to be about another planet.

For anyone else like me who has never heard of this author or series, some googling led me to find out the author's name is actually James H. Schmitz and the protagonist's name is spelled Telzey Amberdon. |

If you can find them, the books by Alexander Key are very good sc-fi oriented books for younger readers.
Just a selection of favorites: Escape to With Mountain Return From Witch Mountain The Forgotten Door The Golden Enemy His books seem to follow a formula of children being the protagonists, the children have a developed psychic power of some kind, the children usually communicate with animals, and there is a underlying message of environmental conservation. |

Honor Harrington, and related adventures in the same universe, from Baen, Written by David Weber. You could start with "A beautiful friendship". Quite a lot in the Honorverse are free from here

I know that The Witches of Karres is on one of the Baen free CDs. I think some of the Telzey stories are, as well. So, you can give them a try and find out how your daughter feels about them.

Gee, what little girl wouldn't be enthralled by long-winded political discussions and tables full of fleet tonnages...
Like with "S. Morganstern's" 'Princess Bride,' I'd think kids would need a highly edited 'good parts' version of the HH books. |

I'd also suggest Andre Norton. If you're in the US, quite a bit of her older work is in the public domain. Some of her later books have themes that might be a little more mature than a 6 yo would appreciate, but I don't think any more mature than some of Heinlein's juveniles.
