Sony uses a different format in its readers for the Japanese market - not ePub.

Where do you get that from? As far as I know, Kobo have only once released a firmware version to Japan that they didn't release to the rest of the world. And that was a popular manual install for everyone else.

ADE 2.0 has supported Japanese vertical text for awhile. I assume that means the latest versions of RMSDK do too. However I haven't seen any implementations. Someone should try it on the new Nook.

Sony's Reader for Android has some ePub3 support, including vertical text. But I don't think it is via RMSDK.
