I've also a large collection of audiobooks (over 400) from audible, CDs and other sources. I play them on both my Ipods and now my Nook HD. Your best bet, based on what you want included, is to set up an audiobook library in Calibre.

Don't waste your time. Start with the books that you have already listened to. Most people get all sorts of gunho to make up their lists and then never finish because they quickly loose enthusiasm. Anyway, start with the books that you have listened to and then add just titles, authors and genre of the remainder. Add detail as you listen. Way easier. The only reason why I even keep a list is because I load an Ipod periodically to give to a small group of senior citizens and a list helps gear more towards their preferences.

For backups, I've begun copying audiobooks to mp3 CDs--generally one book per CD. Don't know that I'll ever use these for actual listening, but I like having physical copies.

I have a very large Audible library, spanning 20 years and 3 different accounts (my old Canadian Audible account, my wife's Canadian Audible account, and my current US Amazon linked account.) I've managed to remove the DRM on about 80% of it, the rest just being a matter of time and sorting out what the issue was on the initial DRM pass.

Organize? Pathetic. Depends on my memory and iTunes or Audible Manager. Devices are mostly iPhone and iPads, depending on where I'm listening. (Car is Bluetooth to the iPhone, iPads are in an Otterbox case for swimming.)

Wow, I thought that I had a lot of audio books. Hard to say exactly how many separate books I have since most of the books are multi part books. I will say that I have about 800 items and 100 GB worth of audio books. I keep my audio books in iTunes. Almost all of them come from audible (except the Harry Potter books and a few others), so I just download the books, copy them into iTunes, then copy them to two different backup devices. When I copy the books into iTunes, I add them to a playlist called audiobooks - unplayed. If I listen via iTunes (usually on my iTouch or iPhone), it gets marked as listened to and I remove it from the list. If I listen via the audible app, then I have to remember to remove it from the playlist. I generally move the audiobooks that I am listening to up to the top of the list, so it's pretty straight forward.

Thanks for all the answers. I do not watch TV so reading and listening to audiobooks are my evening entertainment. I will say that I started out listening on my MP3 player and my computer. I have added my smartphone and my Nook HD+. I do re-listen to audiobooks though. I do not know how many different titles I have. I do know that I have over 220 GB of titles that are not Audible. These are mostly titles I got from the library(average 8-12 discs), put on my MP3 and then when I was done I left it in iTunes. Then the library went to Overdrive, so I haven't been able to do that anymore.

There is so much that I have not been able to run iTunes as it freezes up all the time. Tried WMP and have the same issue. I guess I will need to start a Audio Library in Calibre. Then take them out of the media library and only leave in the one I am listening to. This will hopefully help.

I envy you guys. I would love to be able to listen to a story. I gave audiobooks an effort but I just can't do it. I can't concentrate. I find that I always lose track of the story. I have to read for myself, I can't get into a story that's read to me.

Try again in a few years. I tried in my 30s and couldn't do it. Tried it again in my 40s and it's a much improved experience.

Also, if you lose the drift of a story, just rewind. Since I listen while doing other things, I do get distracted at times, but I just go back a few minutes, and all is well.

Listening is also a learned behavior. Takes some practice.

Same here though I will admit I very rarely order any books that are too thought-provoking in audiobook. And since 90% of my books are Immersive reading I can switch back to reading it if I feel I am losing the gist of the story while being distracted.

I also like to listen to stories I have previously read, it gives me a new understanding of the story when hearing it the second time around. And don't know if I've said it or not, but I too am one of those who can listen and/or read a story again and again. Just as with movies, I always pick up something new each time.

I can rarely listen to fiction I haven't already read. I do well listening to nonfiction or stories I already know.

I have 88 audiobooks on audible. Not as much as some people here, but the list is steadily growing.

auntykatkat, another option would be how I currently store my audiobooks. After I buy it from Audible (or wherever), I create an Mp3 version free of DRM. My audiobooks are then sorted by genre in folders - Fantasy, Scifi, Crime/thriller, Mystery and so on. If I have more than one of an author, I just create an author folder and stuff all the audiobooks by that author into the folder. By having them already converted, it makes it easy for a family member to just drag an audiobook onto their Mp3 player without asking me to do it for them.

Don't forget to have backups. No matter what storage source you have, your backup disks/harddrive/flashdrive can fail. Always have favorites on two different sources.

I was going to pass this thread by since I didn't really think it applied to me, and then I realized it "kinda" did.

When my kids were much younger and we spent time in the car, I really preferred that they be listening to stories rather than our local outlet for "Radio Disney." As a result I bought a bunch of kids' tapes -- mostly Rabbit Ears (which I cannot recommend too highly! They are uniformly excellent!), a series of stories called The Growler Tapes (again, excellent, but they seem to be out of production), etc., etc.

I'm transferring them all over to MP3s and saving them on my external "media" drive. I don't use any particular software to organize them, but I pick descriptive file names and sort through them manually.

As busy as those times were, back when they were in the "under 10" years, listening to these stories brings back some great memories.

I thought I had a lot of audiobooks until I read some of the entries here...now I'll have to look at my actual numbers when I get home

I have a variety of audiobooks from all over the place as well. I keep them in a folder (and backups) with sub-folders based on Author and series (if applicable). I keep a catalog of my ebooks in Calibre and have a custom column that I have been saying I am going to add a tag to (like Audio(mp3), Audio(xyz)) but i recently found out about the polish feature and have started completely overhauling my ebook collection and this got pushed to the back-burner. But to embed tag/image/information to the audio files I use a program called TagScanner and I listen to them on my ipod (less and less now) and my Android Phone using MortPlayer Audiobooks, especially when driving, cleaning, running errands.

Now to see how many i actually have

ETA: looks like I'm in the middle with 250 confirmed and approx 25 or so that i just realized need to be cleaned to my liking
