I would also like to know how one finds the base font and size for each book (if I coined that properly).

It is interesting to see that no one really uses the two largest options. But perhaps if your eyesight is that poor that you needed to use them you wouldn't be doing a lot of browsing an internet forum! |

As for finding out what font sizes a book uses you have to look at the style sheet. 1em would be normal size so you want your main paragraph style and bold and italics to use that size then tweak the other text styles to big a tad bigger or smaller depending on what they are used for. If you remove the Font-Size reference from a style it will use the default size of 1em or some style sheets use normal as the value. |

One to three here. For me, it's easier to read on the eInk than it is paper because the texture/fibers distract me, so I use the smaller size on the Kindle and my tablets. When I read on paper, I like large print.

90% of the time I use size 3 with condensed font on a Kindle 4 black with good lighting. If I have bad lighting options - on the El at night (I live in Chicago) I will probably go to size 4. I used to use size 4 on my grey Kindle but with improved contrast and slightly darker font I find size 3 is ideal.

The majority of time my books come to my kindle with about the same size so that size 4 looks about the same in most all of them. The spacing is different sometimes, but not the size itself. Once in a while I get a book that has some weird formatting and I have to fiddle, but rarely now.
Most of my books come straight from the amazon store to my kindle though as that is where I buy pretty much all of my books. So I don't have that variation of size. |

I use 6, but I have to say that I've been somewhat frustrated of late, that some of the books I select have a HUGE difference between 5 and 6. It's just excessive and I have to 'turn' pages for want of just a LITTLE bit bigger. In this case, I usually convert it to epub and read it on my Nook.

The steps get bigger as you go larger on the Kindle. With most of my books, font size 4 (using my own font) is a tad larger than a paperback font. 3 is a tad smaller. 5 on the other hand is not just larger; it huge. There's a huge jump between setting 4 and 5.
HarryT is right. It depends on the book what font size one needs to set. However, I only rarely need size 5. I mostly use 4, sometimes 3. |

Sure, this poll has almost no sense because base font varies from book to book.
Using Kindle Keyboard, I converted all my epubs via Calibre for comfort reading at setting 4. After migration to PW I had to reconvert everything for setting 5 and to build "fat" version of Helvetica...go figure :-) Last edited by EbokJunkie; 11-11-2013 at 07:49 PM. |
