My library is similar, I think, but there are very long wait lists (compared to another ebook library I use). And in the end, I still think a large portion is paid by my tax dollars; Even though "my library" isn't paying much, I'm still paying the full amount (I think).

It's not cheap when you compare it to buying a $10 paperback that will quite likely last (and can be loaned out) for longer then two years.

I really think it will take legislative intervention to get libraries a fair deal on ebooks. And unfortunately that's quite unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Fair? Why is it not fair? How do you decide if a price is fair?

In Sweden it cost the libraries $3 per loan. So I think $25 for two years is very cheap.

Macmillan is charging libraries $25 for ebooks that they sell to consumers for $8, and attaching an expiration date. It's a ripoff.

Why? US libraries does not pay anything for each loan to the authors so I see this as perfectly reasonable.

Why? They don't have to pay extra for paper books, in fact they often get a discount, which they loan far more of.

I'm all for authors getting more, but are we sure authors are getting anything more for library sales? Wouldn't put it past the big pubs to be using creative accounting and pocketing the extra for themselves.

Wow. $3 per loan? How do Swedish libraries stay solvent?

As AnemicOak mentions, there is no evidence that any of the extra money large publishers charge libraries makes it to the author. (It is possible that the author will get more royalties due to the expiration clauses, but that's uncertain as well.)

They have had to restrict the number of loans for popular books.

Going to the author or not seem to me irrelevant when deciding if it is a rip-off or not. Only the value you get should be looked at and it seems silly to call $20 a rip-off considering what you get for it.

tompe, it's a relative question. In Sweden, yes, this looks like a fantastic deal. In North America, where there is no such per-loan fee, it qualifies as a definite rip-off.

I appreciate that we're more fortunate here then elsewhere. Still doesn't strike me as right, or fair. And I find the Swedish system disappointing.
