I'm proud to say I haven't read a single book in any category.

I don't really use Goodreads (I have way too many books to read by authors I already know about... LOL), but out of curiosity I might just check out what's "in" this year

And the winners are in:
https://www.goodreads.com/choiceawards/best-books-2013 Only one of my voted-for books won in its category (House of Hades in Middle Grade & Children's); out of the other winners, I've only read Allegiant (YA fantasy), which was very low on my personal list of YA speculative fiction books of 2013. |

I keep thinking I should read the MaddAdam books (what's the first one, Oryx and Crake?), but somehow they don't sound appealing at all. Maybe in a few years...
I haven't read the overwhelming majority of the finalists in most categories - many because they haven't sounded interesting, many because I'd never heard of them before. YA fantasy was the only category where I'd at least heard of / been aware of all the finalists, even if half of them were not things I'd like to read. A few finalists in various categories are still on my TBR lists, though, so I'll hopefully get to them at some point. Probably by the time Goodreads awards 2014 are out. |

Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane was my (late entry) favorite book of the year, so I'm pleased to see it win. It's been a good long while since I finished a book and turned right back to the beginning to read it again.
Glad to see MaddAddam win too, even though I'm just on Year of the Flood in the trilogy. No Thomas Pynchon, GoodReads? > ![]() |

From my GoodReads review: Just finished this last night. Loved it. A fitting conclusion to the trilogy, but I could easily see more books in this near-future world based on the ending. I wouldn't say there was any particularly surprises in that ending but the time-frame becomes very compressed in that last chapter more or less summarizing/concluding/and setting a future that the reader can see coming. I loved how she wove in real-world ideas, objects, products, (and even people) to the narrative, which interestingly in many ways becomes a telling of the story within the story. I don't read a lot of novels, but this one was well worth the time spent! |
