In November I bought a refurbished Aura and liked it very much. Nice weight, nice form factor and the great ability to control the brightness with two fingers.
However when lighted the screen colour wasn't even, pretty much the same way as my first Aura HD but more disturbing, and the contrast wasn't that great. Both problems were moot with the light off.
In the end, I preferred to get a refund and I kept on using the Mini and Aura HD.

Thanks for all your advice
I bought a brand new Aura three days ago. I suspect it is one of the latest batches manufactured as they have only been released in Australia and the firmware was 3.1.1.

The screen colour on my Aura is even but there is a slight dark patch about 1 cm from the edges. This is not an issue for me as this is within the margins of the book. I can't compare the contrast with the Aura HD but I note that the font weight and font sharpness can be adjusted in the font settings (go to Font Face, Advanced). I know if this will not affects actual contrast of the screen but I am sure it would affect the apparent contrast.

Good to know you have a god unit. There seems to be more of them lately
I was indeed changing the weight and sharpness of the font to have something less tiring for my eyes, but then it was kind of bulky when the light was off. I must sound picky but that was really how I felt.

I believe that a trouble free Aura is an amazing device. I also like the Aura HD very very much and since I can't have both for now I'll use the latter.

Have a good time reading on your new e-reader

I have one of the new Kobo Aura batch, and it's terrific. No scratches, no pinpricks of light, solid build quality. Wonderful device.

As much as I love my Aura I do have pin pricks and I only bought it in November from WHSmith so I guess you only get the 'new stock' if the retailer has sold all it's original stock.

Don't get me wrong, if I hadn't already have an Aura HD I would be all over the Aura But I can't justify having both the Aura and the Aura HD (in addition to the Mini).

Had a look at the Aura in a shop the other day. It's very neat indeed, so light and nice to hold. But I'm completely hooked on the larger screen of the HD. I can't really imagine ever going back to 6''.

I wouldn't quite describe it as a "God Unit" (they only had the pink ones in stock) but it is a significant upgrade on my Sony PTST-2.

Also, very excited about the Pocket app.
