I want to know why everyone thinks for some reason Amazon is a worse offender in the locked-in category. Any eReader is locked in just as much, and sharing Adobe DRM between different ecosystems is no easier than using the plugin-that-must-not-be-named to remove the DRM altogether.
If you are worried about Amazon or Barnes & Noble or whoever removing your books remotely, then back up the ebook files on your computer. Then you will always have them no matter what. |

If you make Apprentice Alf your friend (Google for details), DRM becomes irrelevant.

ePub is the open source and industry standard. Amazon requires converting away from that. DRM exists in certain stores, but not all. I buy from non-DRM stores. |

I really think it comes down to claiming the walled garden has less potential of causing a political rift in a thread. But that is 100% my reading between the lines and I am probably wrong for some folks. Industry standard by whose standard? More companies use EPUB, that is true. I bet the percent of ebooks in Amazons modified Mobi is the same if not larger then the number of ebooks using EPUB. |

I decided to stick with my Surface Tablet and use the Nook App(and to a lesser extent the Kindle app) as it really seems silly for me to buy an Ereader JUST for books when my tablet for the most part does well.
I use Nook App more simply because B&N made a better app than Amazon did with the Kindle for Windows 8.1 app Besides, buying from Amazon, i actually do not have access to download books i purchased UNLESS i own a kindle device. I've discovered this, which is another reason i dislike Kindle and Amazon. They have cheap prices but i am not able to download the files i purchased to my PC. |

for me in the UK the only reason I went with Kobo as opposed to Kindle (despite having over 500 freebie books from kindle that I needed to run through calibre) was the functionality of borrowing a library book and overdrive in the uk does not allow kindle to borrow books

As a Kindle owner.
[QUOTE=Micah Dawson;2676644]Just looking for some Help and advice<3
So i have never owned an E-reader before. I used to use Amazon Kindle App on my phone(how i used to read books on a 3.5-4 inch device, i have no clue lol) Here is my experience with Kindle, good and bad. 1. Amazon has been amazing in replacing things I broke. ![]() I bought my first kindle[a] from Staples Business Depot in Moncton It had a bad pixel so I returned it and received a new Kindle[b] that day. That one broke 11 months later (my fault, broken screen) Amazon replaced it again with a new kindle[c], again all free. Many months later I broke this by dropping it in water. Amazon replaced it again with a new kindle[d], again all free. Last week I broke this one when it fell from my pocket in the rain. I have bought another Kindle to replace it. If Amazon keeps up such good customer service they will keep me as a loyal customer. 2. I hate DRM Amazon loves DRM ![]() I use the Calibre ebook library program and the DRM removal module so I can remove DRM automatically from every book I own. By using Calibre to manage my library I feel I am not going to be annoyed by DRM in the future for books I have paid for. 3. I have tried to download books from Amazon (waiting for my new Kindle to be delivered). They (for reasons of DRM) want to know what device I plan to send the book to via USB. What this means is I can't buy or download from Amazon until the new Kindle arrives. ![]() 4. The kindle is light, rugged and user friendly. ![]() My library is close to 80,000 books and Calibre helps me manage it. My print library which I have mostly given away was under 10,000 books. These all reflect my love for the kindle. |

Untrue. Amazon don't give a damn one way or the other. It's purely the publisher's choice whether or not a book has DRM.

I didn't know DRM was exclusively a publisher issue. I do know that even with Kindle for PC installed it wants to know which of my (former) kindles to download to, and it will NOT show kindle for PC when asking which kindle I want to read it on. ( ![]() |

No, you misunderstand. Just run K4PC and open the book from there. Once you've opened the book, it's in the "My Documents\My Kindle Content" folder, and from there you can do whatever you want with it.
