Some Kobo Glo readers freezes in KoboLauncher

Logs investigation gives us nothing except that I've found that my kernel is newer (kernel is not a part of KoboRoot.tgz)

Our next steps:

1. please run chess. It have timer (clock) at the top. It updates every 10 seconds. Does it also freeze or timer (clock) continue to work?
2. I've uploaded the KoboLauncherN.sh.zip. Please unzip it and replace the original file. Does Kobo Launcher freeze now? (start it from nickel).

1. Ran chess successfully for 5 mins 50 secs, CR always froze after 3 mins.
2. Replaced KoboLauncherN.sh, CR still running after 10 mins, longer than ever before!

And? Freeze? Probably continious screen updates don't let kobo to freeze
To verify my hypothesis just switch off header with clock: MENU/View/Header

The same method koreader uses. It doesn't kill or freeze nickel But some problems are possible here:
* Nickel sleep can interfere with KoboLauncher sleep
* Don't ever try to connect usb while KoboLauncher is running

1. No freeze, will try your hypothesis tomorrow, have to work now.
2. It isn't really usable, some minor display issues, and not possible to control the light. Nickel sleep disabled so that is not a problem.

Ok. Now It's clear that nickel has some secrets. It do something special to prevent freezing. I want to find the reason very much.

I replaced the original KoboLauncherN.sh (as packaged in 1.2.6.18), and switched off the header. After about 4 mins without touching it, it returned to the launcher which immediately froze.

I have upgraded to 1.2.6.19, and am using the KoboLauncherN.sh from debug, all seems to work fine till now (about 20 mins of use).

1. Is it ok to use this as it is now?
2. Is there anything I should watch out for?

Not quite ok, but reasonably as a temporary workaround. koreader works in the same manner but it restartes reader at exit. There is no need to do restart after KoboLauncher.

Watch out:
1. Usb cable connection when kobo launcher is started.
2. You should set sleep time in nickel at least more than the sleep timeout in CR

I don't see any restrictions besides that. Of cause we should test that sleep mode works fine.

I have disabled the sleep time in nickel, and in Launcher it is set to zero. I make it sleep by using the power button or the sleep cover, both seem to work fine; 1 1/2 hrs now, and no freeze!

UPDATE: 15 hrs later - Still working perfectly, no freeze after some reading, sleeping and waking several times! So happy to be able to use coolreader at last (can't think why kobo didn't just use it).

Same here. With disabled killing of nickel in the .sh file everything seems to be working fine. I'm a fan of CoolReader for 3 years already and more than happy to use it on my Kobo. Thanks for the hard work Sergey!

Today I noticed that it never goes to sleep. Sleep settings are set to Never in nickel. And in KoboLauncher to 5min. Anyway it doesnt sleep...

Yes, sleep by timeout doest`t work now for our current solution (dont freeze or kill nickel). But sleep by button or by sleepcower should work. Anyway, I'll fix sleep by timeout.

btw you can assign sleep to tapzones now.
