... What about Discworld, by Terry Pratchett? There's only 40 of them? They aren't really "up against the world", more like up against human nature (of other people) but are nevertheless really good, like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy except more cheerful and with wizards instead of spaceships. |

Still working my way through the list. I do want to thank everyone who mentioned the Belgariad and the Malloreon. I've spent the last week just -tearing- through these books, and they're getting a special place of honor among my favorites in my collection. Seriously, how did I miss these? They're AMAZING!
And now to go into the rest you recommended... c.c |

You don't mention if you have the Narnia books. They are a good series as well.

Second this. The Lies of Locke Lamora (book one of the series) is good, swashbuckling fun, the plotting is terrific, and it builds up to a very exciting finale. Just started book 2 today in fact, only 20 pages in, but Lynch has again hooked me.
Would also second the Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander, it is excellent. I don't read much fantasy but I really want to read more, there are some worthy recommendations here. I did start to read the George R.R. Martin books. Really enjoyed the first, but I got bored halfway through the second one. It seemed to be a merry-go-round of political machinations and not much was actually happening (just my opinion). |

Check out David Dalglish; very action packed and Dragonlance-ish in its lore and archetypes i.e. paladins, crazed gods, and the like.

![]() These on my To Re-read list for 2014, along with the sequel series, "The Malloreon". (And of course the background works of Belgarath the Sorcerer, Polgara the Sorceress, and The Rivan Codex.) If one happens to like eddings, "The Elenium" and "The Tamuli" are also quite good, with some good (and unexpected) character development. On the other hand, whatever you do, AVOID The Dreamers, also by Eddings. You'll be reading the same story four times over. It's actually the only series that I have in paperback that I don't intend to replace with ebook versions, ever. Also, the first 6 Drizzt books (in chronological order) by R.A. Salvatore are very good. Quote:

Just a note since this thread has surfaced again....the "Belgariad" series by Edding's is now available at Amazon US in Kindle editions. $4.99 each. I may have to try it given the comments in there.

I'm not sure if you're only looking for epic fantasy, but relatively new author and Campbell nominee Max Gladstone has a very good fantasy series "The Craft Sequence", Three Parts Dead, Two Serpents Rise, and Full Fathom Five, which are sort of urban fantasy deist murder mysteries, (at least the first two are) set in a world with live and dead gods, loosely based on gods from various Earth cultures. The gods' powers are akin to high finance and a god can be killed with sneaky bad contracts and can be brought back to some form of afterlife through other financial/spiritual contracts. Human crafts(wo)men are able to tap into the gods' powers and maybe even resurrect or replace a dead one. That's right, accountancy is next to godliness, or something like that. Seriously, though, I thought the first two were very good, haven't gotten around to reading the third one.
