Of course you can, I have over 7000 ebooks on my AuraHD, only one of which came from the Kobo site. The device is not the store. The device can operate fine without the store.

Obviously I know that, I was just wondering if the OP had tried it.

That's the problem. I've got the book from Kobo OK - it just won't download from my PC to the Kobo for whatever reason.

I bought another book last year and only got half a book on the Kobo reader instead of the whole book, but the whole book had downloaded OK to my PC.

I think the problem lies with the reader itself.

Have you tried downloading it directly from the website (most Kobo books are available as ePub's) and loading it without using Kobo's desktop software? I've never used Kobo's software, just sideloaded ePub's or downloaded directly to my reader (which is admittedly a newer model), might be worth a shot.

Bookworm2013,

The Kobo Wireless (KW) is the earliest kobo device, as you are thinking of buying a kindle, why not use the money you would have spent on that in getting either a kobo glo (KG) or aura (KA)?

Your problem may be as simple as epub you have bought is of a newer version than the KW can handle e.g. the epub is an epub3, and the KW can only handle epub1's or 2's.

I can recommend the KG as an excellent device, with the adder advantage you can read in the dark with it.

Thanks
Nascarfan1972.

Minor nit: the Kobo Wireless was the second generation Kobo device. The original Kobo ereader did not have WiFi though it would talk to your Blackberry over Bluetooth.
