The manager at Chapter even open the boxes and on site to check for defect before I even walk off the store. The managers didn't even give me a hard time because the proof is right in front of them.

The question we should be asking is how many times did you return the Aura to get a perfect one out of the box.
As someone mentioned already, according to stores the returns are no different than any other electronic product. I have a feeling that anyone who has registered on an ereader forum is probably in the 1% (not economically of course) and probably is much more demanding than the average reader.

I absolutely think it's the best device on the market at the moment, it certainly is for my needs, which include both SD card (or at least 4GB on device, and this has both), a light, collection support, touch screen, and either epub or mobi. Buttons would be nice, but I can live without them if all the other features are there.

Kobo does need to get on the ball with QA obviously, but hardware-wise they've got a very solid device. It even fixed the issues I was having with the Glo regarding software.

Yes! I love my Aura HD but I love the Aura too...it's perfect for taking in my purse and travel. The HD hasn't left the house since I got the Aura.

interesting fact... the satisfied % in this poll is a very close match to the 4 & 5 customer reviews scores for the kindle PW 2 on the amazon site.

I see complaints of pinholes etc on the Paperwhites too, but we (hubby, daughter, daughter-in-law, and myself) have four Paperwhites and one Paperwhite 2 between us and none have had the colored spots or pinholes. I did have to get the Paperwhite 2 replaced because no matter what I did it refreshed every single page and the flashing drove me crazy, but that wasn't a screen defect. We've got two Kobo Glos, two Aura HDs, and an Aura and none have any screen defects. I don't know if it's bad batches or luck of the draw but so far we've all been really lucky.

Assume 100,000 people buy a product. Assume 5% of those people have problems (that's about the max for acceptable failure rate in consumer products). That means for every 100,000 people who buy the product, 5,000 people have issues. Which sounds like a lot, until you turn it around -- for every 100,000 people who buy the product, 95,000 people do not have issues. Sounds much better that way, right?

My wife has a launch-day KPW1. Never had any issues. No bad pixels, no bad colors, no light banding, etc. I have a launch-day (or near enough) Kobo Aura. No bad pixels, no light banding, no diamond or scratch patterns on the screen, no light leaking, etc. Are my wife and I just lucky? I'd say no. We'd be "lucky" (the bad kind of lucky) if we had issues, since we're 95% likely to get good products and only 5% likely to get bad.

Probably misquoting here, but reminds me of a Ray Charles song lyric "If it weren't for bad luck, I just wouldn't have no luck at all."

Nah, 4500 of them move on to another product, 450 of them drop the idea of owning an ereader and 50 of them register at Mobileread and vent.

David

I think most people that bought a defective product would return defective product for refund or replacement.

I tried a Kindle Paperwhite, but there weren't enough options to change the font and I hated the way the text lightened to grey with the light on.

The Kobo Aura I bought today has no defects and I really like the ability to customize fonts, especially the weight of the font. I also like the textured back, I'll try using it for a while without a case. I'm not looking forward to the learning curve, but I did manage to send books to it from calibre using Send to Disk, so maybe it won't be too bad.

Did you use "Send to Device" or "Save to Disk"? They're two very different pieces of functionality, though I guess technically both could work if you used "Save to Disk" to save to the mounted storage location of your Aura. "Send to Device" is preferred, especially with the extended driver plugin that will convert epubs to kepubs so that you can use the superior kepub rendering engine rather than Kobo's old copy of ADE.

Save to Disk. I hadn't updated calibre recently so the Aura wasn't recognized as a device yet. That's working now and I've been reading up on the drivers and the shelves plugins, but I'm not sure what I want. I have no interest in syncing with my existing Kobo account (I created a new one for the Aura) and I already have many of my books in EPUB format, so I might just use that, there seem to be advantages and disadvantages to each format. I'm a fan of the KISS principle.

I am finding the response time of the Aura a little slow, swipes seem to register better than taps, and hopefully I'll figure out what's needed to get the device to recognize my actions.

Kepub is just epub with some extra stuff, but it makes for a better reading experience on the device (shows percentage complete and time to finish chapter/book, for example). Using the extended driver is basically transparent if your books are already in epub format.

Totally satisfied. No device is ever 100% perfect, at least advanced devices, but this as close to it as there currently is in my opinion.
