Your experience is on par with most of the MTP calibre beta testers.

No reason to throw it out, I suggested upgrading. Come April there will be no more security updates. As long as you are behind a good firewall and the box is for home serving only (no open ports or casual user web surfing) you should be fine with decent Virus / malware protection.

Absolutely. It's behind a firewall, has up-to-date AV software, and is very rarely used interactively; it's just fine the way it is.

So I think we've concluded that it's normal for the OP's Fire not to be detected by Calibre under XP, but it should be detected under Vista, shouldn't it?

What do you mean when you say 'recognized'? At the OS level (windows explorer) or are you referring to Calibre.

I think the MTP support comes from Windows Media PLAYER (11?).
(Dell D4600 here and my old Shuttle AMD which won't even run Sigil)
My TAB shows on both (as well as the Sansa Clip in MTP mode, but only on the Dell. Spotty coverage seem the rule )

I mean that on my XP machine, MTP devices don't appear as drives in Windows Explorer.

Not to pick nits, but MTP devices don't appear as drives on any version of Windows. They show up as devices that you can navigate their file system, but no drive letter.

"Devices", then, if you prefer . My point is that under my version of XP, they simply don't appear in Windows Explorer at all.

They show up as 'Other' on my systems.
The show as Media Players in the device manager (you might also try a 'Driver update' (right click on the device in the device manager) as device drivers are not usually part of the automatic 'Critical Updates'
