Yeah, no. It all depends on your priorities. My poor HD hasn't been used in weeks. The screen size hasn't made one iota of difference to me. And it's not because the screen is lacking, either. I just get more of my books from Amazon, and the screen size is negligible.

The same for me, my Aura HD has been unused for over 2 months now. My Paperwhite 1 is just better, and I ordered the PW2.

But that's not really comparing apples to apples, then. KPW is a 6" device. AuraHD is a 7" device. If I'm choosing between a Kindle and a Kobo, it seems the comparison would be between the KPW2 and the Aura 6".

Personally, there were two main reasons I chose Kobo:

1. As much as I love Amazon as a shopping place, I dislike their approach to selling ebooks (refusing to use the industry-standard epub format) and devices (lack of font selection on the KPW without hacking, refusing to provide access to the Google Play Store on the Fire, etc), and
2. I'm a Nook lover and buy most of my books from B&N, but they're seriously dragging their feet on new Nook hardware and my Glowlight is dying.

If Barnes & Noble had a dog in this hunt (the Glowlight is 2 generations old now, with no successor in sight), it would've been a very easy choice. Instead, I got to choose between getting a KPW, hacking it for font selection and functionality, and converting my moderately-sized epub library to mobi/kf8, or getting a Kobo Aura and keeping my epub library as-is (but using Calibre plugins to sync as kepub for extra functionality).

I bought the Aura HD before the new PW came out --- and I don't regret it at all. If I had to make the choice now I would be more tempted to get the PW2, but in the end I would still get the Aura HD. I want the bigger screen, period.

I would choose the KPW2. I already own a Kindle (Keyboard), and I haven't researched the Aura HD at all.

I would choose KPW2, but I hasten to add that I'm already fairly invested in Amazon. I've already had 2 Kindles and most of my books come from that store.

So Kobo probably wouldn't get much more than a that looks nice from me - gun or no gun.

The KPW2, for sure.

The Aura HD has a bigger screen, but it wastes so much space with it's header, footer and big line height that you actually don't get a lot more text on screen compared to the KPW2. I don't like the Aura HD's back either.

Now, if you said Kindle Paperwhite 2 and the new 6 inch Aura... then I'd be in trouble, as I have not yet looked into the Aura. I'd choose the KPW2 because I know what I was getting.

I don't know why Kobo insists on not using that precious real estate, but on the flip side I suppose it does make the "page" look more like a traditional book. Of course using Calibre is a easy enough solution to that problem.

Anyhow, I don't think either device has any serious issue that would detract from the reading experience that it's meant to give.
